Took my K1200RS in to Ocean, Plymouth today for the recall work to be done. Whilst waiting I decided to try out a demo. Already done the gs, rs and rt thing so tried out the f800st. Any of you guys tried it? Took a little while to get used to it but after a few miles, I was chucking it about like an old friend. What a lovely GS it would make. Very light and the engine is a stonker, pulling smoothly even in 6th .Recon if they produced it, it would cause quite a dent in the 1200 gs sales( that will get you twelvies gagging)
Does anyone know if they are going to do a GS version?:thumb

Bought misen one :thumb

Sold the 1200GS-A 'cos it wuz too big, heavy & cumbersome. Waiting for the F800GS, there WILL be one, but for the 2008 model line up. Wanting to keep some miles off my precious 650 Dakar for another Long Way Home trip! Bought Rainbow's ex demo F800ST and it's a corker. Fantastic engine, as much power as the 1150's but with the weight of a 650 :D

Nice Micky. I keep thinking that one of these might be the very thing to get SWMBO back onto two wheels since she sold her Thundercat.

I asked the same question of a BWM dealer a couple of weeks ago.
His reply was that BWM were having trouble making enough of the other 800 variants and that they had not heard whether there would be a GS version in the near future.
But then again, would they have told me if there was?.I doubt it.:nenau

Bought meself an S in October, crackin wee bike, excellent motor, handles well, stops well and does everything i ask of it. :thumb

At the BMW Club AGM in April, we had a presentation from BMW's UK Sales Director.

He said that an F800GS was under development.

I was surprised when it didn't appear at the NEC Bike Show - maybe the new 650 range has delayed things.

As posted before... couple of months ago Alan Cathcart, Motorcycle Sport and Leisure did an interview with boss man Diess at BMW... there will be an F800GS for sure.

I reckon they could make one now, but it wouldn't half dent the 1200GS sales

Reckon too that they want it right... it'll be campaigning the Paris Dakar :thumb

Got mi name on one for sure :D

I rode it on a windy day, bloody awful cramped little thing without any weather protection , bit quicker than my 1150 adv but I wouldn't part with my savings for one.
I thought it was trully awful.
well there you go, it's what you are familiar with I suppose.
Great bike for my wife
but I doubt the dealer would do a straight swap so I will have to keep the wife:D :D

I concur - I had one as a courtesy bikr from Allen Jefferies and couldn't wait to give it back.

Thankfully they gave me an Ohlins equipped R1200S as a courtesy bike last week. If they put that engine in a GS I'd buy one tomorrow

It's just strange to see how people want to have a high revving engines on the trail bikes, i.e. put R1200S engine on GS? :nenau

Buy the Benelli Tre-X then! The 130+bhp I4 screamer put on the TDM-style frame.

I prefer the very essence that the big trail bike should be: the tractor-style pulling from idle rpms, making the ideal traction you really can feel with your back side hammering it on the loose surfaces, and everyday commute riding comfort, nothing beats the lower compression R-GS boxer twin in this field at similar CC bikes i've tried.

Me really don't like some high revving fekard engine that starts to breathe post 3-5K+ rpms, it just asks you to revvit hard to get it moving, having a narrow powerband only in the mid-high to high revs, intense 2-smoker like gearchange needed to put that narrow powerband on the road, for me that is unridable in the offroad conditions i do (gravel mainly) and uncomfortible to ride in everyday communiting conditions where i'm lazy to change gears. I prefer the "diesel" pulling power.

I really prefer the engine having widely focused power band from idle to mid that the big trailes (should) have. Top end has very little meaning for me other than a smooth straight tar road where i previously redlined my sportsbike but it got really boring in time and I moved over to a boxer GS. For only the "straight" tar road there are always better bikes than a big trailies like the GS. So these guys who bash the engine not being like a R1200S really are a "fashion victims" that bought a GS that simply isn't the bike for them in the reality. They just miss the point IMHO.

Your dead right, i totally agree:thumb .............................

You are getting old:rob :D

Ah, but the 800 pulls just great from tickover with it's long stroke engine.

In the real world how many people go mud plugging on their 1200GS's? The engine is superb, no doubt about that, but the bloody weight :rob

If we're talking torque the 1200GS develops max. torque at 5,500rpm, the 800 at 5,800rpm..... surely we aint gonna fall out over 300rpm :beerjug:

Micky, I agree, The 800 is no rev devil and thatr is what impressed me. It really did pull very well even below 5000 revs. Its what I have always liked about BMs, Even my K1200RS pulls cleanly from under 2000. I too tried the 800 on a very winy day(force8/9) and purpously took it out on the coast road from Rame Head along Whitesand Bay w2ith the wind onshore. It was really excellent. Glad some of you guys agree . For those who havnt tried it yet, Grab a test ride !!:rob

Took the ST and S out for a test ride a couple of months ago. Really enjoyed them; the ST would be my personal choice; I'm more suited to the riding position and I like the extra protection. But I thought they were really fun bikes. The only criticism was the fuel injection at low speeds but I suspect once run in and with a couple of services under their belt this would improve (the S which had done a reasonable number of miles was noticeably better than the ST which had not had its 600 mile service).

no twins in the dakar mate...loz

Err I thought the R900 had two of those sticky out things which makes it twin I think. Or have they introduced new rules?:rob

No twins in the dakar?

Loz have the rules changed or something, Isn't the 990 Ktm not a twin, or maybe i was dreaming last time I serviced one. Can't see KTM letting the dakar get away with banning Twins as the 990 was made for the Dakar and as most of the field are KTM's they are a powerful body. Me thinks Pastyman might be right, if BMW were to field the 800 in a big bore 900 Dakar trim gs then there would be a race on. think about it in the big unlimited class there has never been a race between marques as the BMW packed up the 900 after Deeks got killed and KTM have been on there own for the past few years.
Hey that would be worth watching.......:thumb

Sorry Si, the rules now state a 650 single is the biggest capacity allowed on two wheels..............
