At what revs does a 2008 GSA make peak power?

Hi, not long jumped up to a 2008 GSA(last week) from my 02 1150. Finding it huge in comparison and totally different power! ! I initially thought the clutch to he slipping but after another hour today trying to replicate it, come to the conclusion it's just getting into its power band around 5.5k revs? Then it shifts and power really kicks in. Would this be right? Loving it though

Yes, slight emissions hole around 4400 rpm. Starts to make proper power from 5500 to around 7100.

Although the silver one's are faster !

Just enjoy.

The gap around 4000 to 5000 revs is pretty bad making it feel like a power band. Fitting an aftermarket decat header improves it a bit but they are programmed that way. A remap or AF-XIED setup will greatly improve the bike with minimal if any effect on fuel consumption.

Thanks lads, was more akin to an old 2 stroke with a power band !! Glad wasn't me over thinking it , again thanks for the replys :thumby:

Looking at people's experience with the AF-XIED there are now two options. Both will cost much the same as the AF ideally needs wide band O2 sensors.

These bikes are more about momentum and handling rather than out and out power. It takes a lot to shift this kind of weight but once it's moving that's where the joy starts.

Yours is a mighty fine looking steed.

Thanks , very happy with it, just a hell of a difference to what I had before !

Yes I intend to do just that. Low mileage 1 owner machine. So needs a lot more use which it will with myself .

Check the details for corrosion. I get accused of always moaning about the subject but you have a 10 years old bike so corrosion has to be on the list of issues. The engine front cover rots from the small screws which attach the alternator belt cover. The bottom one and the two high up under the fuel tank are the worst culprits that latter can shear off if left too long.

The alternator an all R1200s is at risk especially lightly used bikes. Corrosion gets into the frame and cracks it open. A good soaking with ACF 50 should keep problems at bay.

Check the final drive for oil level. BMW dropped the level from 220ml to 180 because they had problems with the breather overflowing. I run mine with 200ml and have had 220 with no problems. Within reason the more the better. Mine was rebuilt at 50K miles.

If you have "protection" covers on the engine or frame take them off and check what's happening hidden away. I had some nasty frame corrosion because of dirt build up. I had other paint issues but mine seems to have been especially bad for frame paint. My brother's bike had a right old mess on the engine front cover. It looked nothing to be concerned about until we removed the crud catcher.

Outside all that these really are great bikes. The handling is amazing and you will need to reprogram your head to avoid overdoing it. Sorting the fuelling with a decat exhaust really brightens it up. It goes from something of a plodder to something really sporty but extremely usable.

I HEAR YA....rode back from Belgium in July and there its stayed ever since.... lost my mojo...

Looks a great bike there Bazman. Don't over worry your self with all the stuff you hear as they are pretty bombproof.

Corrosion can be an issue but not too bad on most bikes. I use FS365 on mine year round and no real issues to worry about.

FD can be an issue and a good idea is to change the FD oil at every service so you can check if there is anything there shouldn't be floating around but a rebuild is pretty reasonable if you do have an issue.

The power really does come in above about 4500 rpm and considering they are big old bikes, they will get moving and a world away from the 1150.

They are superb bikes and enjoy.....

Thanks Bilco, suppose I shouldn't really be comparing to the 1150, but as I jumped from that to this never realised so much had changed! Again thanks for the comments. Corrosion is very little but at usual points. Has led a relatively easy life looking at the service history and miles at just over 18k !

I mentioned corrosion because my brother's bike (similar age and even fewer miles) was really quite bad in some places. The main hit for him was the engine front cover. Corrosion had got under the paint up at the top fully hidden away by the alternator belt cover. He had an oil leak which turned out to be corrosion getting under the crank position sensor seal. Cleaned up and refinished all was well but quite a surprise at the time as we simply could not find the source of that leak.

Lightly used bikes are more likely to suffer such things than bikes used every day.

Red ones are deffo quicker despite others saying otherwise ;) Mine is standard apart from AF Xied which make it more tractable. Pulls cleanly all the way through. I have decatted headers and gutted silencer sitting in my garage but don't think either are really necessary now. I came from 4 cylinder gsxrs so it was a big drop in power but didn't take long to adapt. Wouldn't have any other big bike now apart from my RED gsa :D
