Wanted Audi TT

My eldest is looking for an older convertible TT.

He has seen quite a few at £3500-£4500 - I know that at that price we won't find anything perfect... I just want him to be in something reliable, hence asking here.

So - please does anyone have anything that fits the bill?

Alternatively, other than the usual careful checks, FSH, MOTs etc, anything specific to TTs that we should be looking for?

If it's a petrol - ask seller to demonstrate removal of all 6 sparkplugs (don't ask) - knowing what I now know , service receipt for same would NOT satisfy me !!

Dead pixels on dash is common, water ingress (check footwells esp behind seats), timing belt & water pump, turbo

I owned one very recently for two years.
This is NOT a car for the young or unwary
My suggestion is a VW golf.
My TT DSG V6 mk1 3.2litre ate loads of money. I sold it at a great loss as I struggled getting in and out.
On balance the Porsche boxster was a much better car IMHO

I bought a TT Convertible Diesel 6 years ago intending to keep it for 6 months then sell it and I still have it! I get 60+ to the gallon, it's been incredibly reliable.

Oh, and don't bother with the 3.2, not that I expect you would in this case. Worse car, too heavy. 220 BAM is the sweet spot generally.

Yep, Mrs G has a 180 bhp hardtop many years ago and that was exciting enough.

I had a 3.2 DSG Mk1 and loved it. Quite a heavy car, they suffer from understeer by (re)design and can be made to handle much better by sleeving the front lower arm bushes with "Cookbots" or similar. The VR6 is a cracking engine with decent power at 250BHP but quite heavy and the cam chains stretch, requiring an engine out to fix typically at around £1000 + Vat. at an independent garage.

The 225BAM 1.8 Litre turbo is a good motor and tuneable but can suffer from boost leaks on older plumbing.

I believe the road tax on the Mk1 TT is about to become astronomical from what I have seen online. Buy with caution.

What's happening with the road tax then ? I though it was only a CPI increase ? Most mk1 are pre March 2006 so will be capped at about £430PA I think.
Am I missing something ?

Wifey just bought a 2017 tt 1.8 tfsi lovely car, drives like a car but put the foot down and it's a refined sports car. Plenty of space in the boot, but the back seats are non existent!! £195 vel

Any registerd after March 2006 are going to be taxed very close to £800 pa. This is why they are all coming up for sale cheap
They are worth more as " breakers" than cars
I think mine went to be broken up for parts shame on 114kmiles and fsh 5 owner

Yes but the VED cap for cars registered before March 2006 is unchanged other than inflationary increase. Rate K2 in this link:

Check the extortional cost of road tax. The very early ones had cheaper road tax so I believe.

If your looking to buy a car that's high insurance, very low mpg high maintenance costs the difference between approx £400 & £800 road tax post 2006 needs to be considered
