Been out on the bike today as the weather was lovely here in Devon.

Twice during my trip (went about 50 miles) I heard a long audible beep of about 4-5 seconds. Obviously a warning sound but I cant work out why.

Oil levels are ok, as is brake fluid, and tyre pressures ok, so I am a bit puzzled. It is going into Ocean for a service monday but I would love to know if any other tossers have had the same issue.

I have heard it before when the bike was new. It is a 2011 1200GS. 5250 miles - so not run in yet.

Any help appreciated.

When you were stopped, engine off or whilst you were hooning along?

Do you have an alarm fitted?

Do you have an Autocom / Bluetooth or something similar fitted in your helmet? If yes, it may be something as simple as you have the channel open.

Thumb resting on horn button? :blast ;)

Sure it's a 'beep' rather than a 'whine'?

Those silly exhaust valve motors make an odd noise if they go faulty

Beeping Noise

Hi, and thanks for your responses.

To answer your queries, a definate beep - clear and constant. First time I was at a junction (engine running) and the other I was doing 30 mph.

I have heard it before but generally when stationary with engine running.

I do have an alarm and a bluetooth helmet but the noise is clearly outside the helmet.

Oh, and yes - I asked my thumb and he said that is was not on the horn!:aidan

It just sounds like a warning beep but stops after 4-5 seconds. No performance issues noted. :(

So, a definitely external 'beeeeep' of five seconds duration, twice in a 50 mile ride. So, it's definitely not a squeak from, say, a binding brake pad or the suspension or some fancy seat you are sitting on?

Excluding the Bluetooth headset, about the only thing that can 'beeeep' is something with a 'speaker' of some sort. Which probably means either the horn (receiving just a little of juice) or the alarm.

Does the alarm on your bike has a 'battery is low' warning perhaps?

Does your alarm have a fob, which you are accidentally trying to activate somehow, setting off a 'failure to arm, as the bike is moving' warning?

It sounds to me (yes, i can hear it from my house), like your Exhaust valve actuating. I've heard this high pitched beep/whine, on a few new GS's.

Take it back to your dealer, and have them sort it...:thumb

When is a 'Beeeeeep' really a 'Whiiiiiiine'..... or an electrical 'Urrrrrrrrgh'?

This is calling out for one of those 'Can you record your exhaust note, mate?' threads.

Good call (to you and the BGT) on a sticking exhaust valve thingy whatsit :beerjug: But the OP bod is very insistent that it's definitely a 'Beeeeeeep', so the jury may still be out.

My little beep

mostly plausible suggestions! and you have all made me smile..

Could be something to do with the alarm as when I just turned it on and the alarm disarmed there was a similar beep albeit shorter.

Hopefully diagnostics on Monday may reveal the culprit:type

Will let you all know how I get on - must go now - off to the docs to check out my tinitus.. :D

Just a thought....after a ride, I was getting a strange "electronic" beep/whine noise on my Duc. I thought it was ECU but turned out to be pressure in the fuel tank farting to atmosphere. A common thing apparently (on Ducs). New to GSs so don't know if it's a possible alternative explanation ?

Service done today

Took the bike in today for its service.

Still none the wiser on the beep. No error code but they did concur with robbo1200adv that it was perhaps something to do with the exhaust and was going to spray it with some WD40 to free it up a bit....

But thank you fellow GSERS for your comments, humour and advice although some was about as good as a chocolate teacup! :P

Til next time..

Next Instalment - blinking beep!

Still not found out the problem but something else I have noticed..

When I turn the key on I hear an intermittent beep coming from a control box below the seat and behind everything else.

It appears to run in time with the Brake Failure Light on the dash that flashes every time you put on the ignition and before you start it and move off. The beep is similar to the continuous beep I have heard before so I am starting to think there may be a link.

Just to add to the mystery - it does not happen all of the time. :blast

I have been to the docs and the tinitus is improving, my pacemaker has been re-tuned and I don't take the gameboy out with me anymore. :aidan

So me old muckers.....

If you mean under the pillion seat, then the only electronics under there is the anti-theft alarm unit (with replaceable batteries) and the wires to the rear lights

It would of course be an ideal place to hide some form of joke device :green gri - Have any so called friends had access to your bike?

EDIT: Sequence of how to get at alarm unit available here:

Foof for thought but....

I do have such friends .... but I keep them well away.

There is a small black box, left hand side (Nearside) behind my tax disc holder between the V in the frame.
