I've just separated the gearbox cases to have a look and there is no sign of anything wrong at all in there. I do have some slack between the input shaft splines and the clutch friction plate so I'm assuming that's where the rattle is coming from in neutral. I've ordered a new friction plate and it will be interesting to hear if there is any improvement.

Do the gear pinions have any side play/endfloat on their shafts ?

Mine had a little bit of free play which allowed the pinions to shuttle slightly when unloaded in neutral which I believe was the source of gear chatter at idle. It shifted beautifully though and never baulked so I was happy to live with a little gear rattling at idle.
