AUGUST - French Gastro Tour

First reserve

Stayed in Spain two weeks longer than originally intended and blown hole in travelling funds. Mind you had a bloody great time! Could I be included as a 1st reserve if I fill the coffers in time for August Gastro bash? :ChrisKelly

Hey David, I thought you had turned native so long were you departed....:D. As one of the original group that I had to let down last month, I am sure that the others would be only too happy to have you along. :thumb

Our present route allows for starting at Portsmouth on Monday evening, August 17th to catch the 2300 overnight ferry to LeHavre for an 0800 landing on Tuesday 18th. At the moment, Ballistic has bravely taken responsibility for co-ordinating ferry bookings and, as we are currently 4 riders, will be booking a cabin for the present number. If you decide to come along at the last minute, I am sure you can kip on a made-up bivvy on the floor should nothing else be available. :augie Return is Saturday 22nd leaving LeHavre at 1700 and landing in Porsmouth at 2130. Well, that's the plan anyhow.....:type

Good to see you back. :thumb

You are a true Gentleman John :ChrisKelly.....I can't help but notice my addition does make numbers uneven for accommodation and ferries etc Might be better to wait for a general consensus (what a gracious fellow eh) and funds permitting of course..........

Just read your Armax post..........that's a shame, currently using said Rukka Jacket myself and it does everything it states on the tin and more........ the colour is starting to fade.

Yup, great kit but if it doesn't feel right........:nenau. And I am sure that the others will welcome you aboard as a fellow brother.........take my word for it. :augie

David... I haven't heard from weavo or gr8roberto yet, so I don't know if there'll be four of us, or five. If there are five, then I'll book you in with a "seat", which is the cheapest option... if one of the other two drop out, then we'll still have the cabin for four... cozy
By the way, weavo & gr8roberto, I think I stated that we return on Sat 27th in my PM... I meant Sat 22nd, of course :blast

Ballistic- just shot you a PM back. I'm there sir :thumb2

Count me in. Sorry I'am last, SWMBO wanted to see Harry Potter. Will PM details to Balistic.

Ah, good news indeed.....:D. Now if fishbird manages to calm down his ladies and saves up some dosh, we should be a happy little bunch of Tossers. :ChrisKelly

Ok.. I have all the details of oldrascal, gr8roberto and weavo... they have all confirmed that they are happy with the Portsmouth-Le Havre ferry crossings.
I'll book the ferry tomorrow, with a 4-berth cabin.
All I need now is to know whether fishbird wants me to book for him as well, in which case I need his details... name, bike type/model/reg no., email address and mobile number... please PM me.
Once all that's done, I'll circulate everyone's details to each of us via email... and then it's down to oldrascal to do his magic :101

Ballistic, I presume that, as you are going to book tomorrow, you will have to pay unless the ferry just accept a booking and then we pay them individually. But if you do need to pay at booking, can you give us your PayPal address so that we can send you the payment tout de suite. If we mark the payment as a personal gift, there will be no charges. :augie

Thanks for all the effort - you have done in one day what I couldn't manage since the beginning of last month. . But never fear, this oldrascal will take great pride in guiding this merry bunch of Tossers to a culinary and Bacchanalian heaven.:ChrisKelly

Anyhow, I'll get the route posted tomorrow and confirm the first night's stopover. Does anyone need a MapSource route or am I the only one with GPS?

I'm in

Will PM you details Weavo :JB............these women I love 'em they are so understanding of a man's needs........ bless 'em.:JB

Route

oldrascal would you PM Mapsource file when you manage to sort route. Might be handy if at least two people know suggested route......you never know! :thumb

Now listen up girls.............:augie.

Here is the initial route info. It is subject to variation if we decide to detour:

Total distance from LeHavre to Clermont-Ferrand by my slightly scenic route is 357 miles. This will take about 10 hours were we to do it in one hit but, as this is meant to be fun, I am planning a stopover after about 5 to 6 hours.

This assumes an 0900 departure from Le Havre, then 3 or so hours of riding (allowing for fuel, coffee and 'comfort' stops), then lunch of at least an hour with a further 2 or so hours in the afternoon of the first day.

Day 2 will see us have a lesiurely breakfast on the hotel terrace in the warm morning sun :D followed by a good 5 hours further riding (again, stopping when needed) before arriving at our destination which is an enchanting hotel about 5 miles outside of Clermont-Ferrand. Read about it here. You should allow about £30 for fuel (this is a one-way cost).

The hotel has availability for Wednesday and Thursday and we would start the return on Friday 21st using a different route and aiming for one further night's stopever. The hotel is very biker friendly and has secure parking. There are also special tarriffs for biker groups such as ours but I would need to call them and discuss this. For the moment, there is availability for one room with four beds and for one room with 2 beds - both with bathrooms ensuite.

The total price per person for both nights and including breakfast is about £80 but I suspect that there is a better deal to be done. I will keep you informed.

I will try and put all this in MapSource but, should anyone feel brave enough, here is the proposed route:
