“The founding father of DIY adventure motorcycling boom. Hilarious and inspirational in equal measure – there’s no-one like him!” - Bike magazine

Making a welcome return to the Grassington Festival Fringe, Austin will be sharing tales from his shoestring motorcycle expeditions, Mondo Enduro and Terra Circa and, no doubt, any other subject that springs to mind. These motorcycle adventures took him and his friends twice around the world and resulted in subsequent cult films and a TV series.

Adults only.

Well, that was a major disappointment - a lecture and film show about old informercials :eek

We were kind of expecting the subject matter to be motorcycles and/or adventure travel :blast

We snuck away at the interval before we died of boredom....

ah - Austin is really into pop art and anything retro so perhaps the context of his presentation is not surprising but perhaps the advert should have been clearer...
You should have come down to Ripley - his 1.75hr presentation Mondo Enduro presentation was extremely funny and well worth the weekend ticket

Have to agree total nonsense left when it came to the film about shovels:topic just checked on the Grassington website it mentions talk about his motorcycle adventures and anything else that comes to mind, well motorcycle adventures seemed to be the last thing on his mind. disappointing to most there I expect.:(

It wasn't just us then, although I think Austin realised pretty early on that the audience were looking bored and restless.

We did feel the centre of attention as we got our bike gear out of the panniers and got ready to ride home - don't know whether we started an exodus, but there were a couple of others who looked to be heading for their cars.

I saw somebody leave before the interval , two of my mates left at the interval as well , the two of us left with 2 films to go and as we were at the front had a quick glance back, the room was half empty.Fours of traveling in total, got drenched on the way home total waste of time.Left a message on the Grassington website be interesting to see if get a reply.

I had the misfortune to see the film about shovels. Given the way it was advertised, I should think most people turned up to hear motorcycle adventure exploits. Why he thought that would be the time to try out his Public Information Films talk is beyond me. I was interested in the Adventure Travel Film Festival advert he played at the beginning, and thought about going along next year, until I found out what is included in Austin's idea of interesting films:
1937 GPO recruiting film.
Novelty musical act (Possibly also thirties. The only good film of the night, and disappointingly brief at around 3 minutes).
1967 Seattle world's fair advert/Bell Telecom advert
1970s 'Don't play on the railways kids' type film.
B&W British Coal Board film on 'The Shovel'.
I left after the shovel, as it was 11PM and I had a 2 hour ride home (not the longest in our group) and work the next day. I only stayed as long as I did because I paid a tenner and I'm a tight northern git.
I was properly disappointed with the whole presentation. The only saving grace was a good ride over there with some mates. :blagblah

Received email back from Grassington festival
Hi Richard

Thank you for this. Your email is not the only one we have received on this subject.
As you realise the Festival Fringe is a programme of non-selected work which is organised outside the Festival main programme. I have therefore forwarded your email to the event organiser who I hope will be in touch with you.
I am very sorry that the evening was obviously such a disappointment to you and many others as it reflects badly on the main Festival. However, it is one of the issues of running a 'fringe' that we are not in control of either content or marketing material and therefore we were unaware of the discrepancy as we merely published what we were provided with by the organiser.
I do hope you continue to support the Festival and that we can welcome you to Grassington again in the future.

Kind regards
Amelia Vyvyan
Grassington Festival Director

Just wondered how many others have had a moan as well .

Recieved another email from the organiser

Hi Richard, I am sorry to read your email, as the organiser of the event I share your dissapointment. I had put a lot of effort in to bring Austin to a wider audience, as somewhat a maverick the fringe event was the only place that could accomodate him. Normally his off piste ramblings are the most entertaining parts of his show however he had obviously mis judged his approach on this occasion and the new format was news to me. I can only apologise and perhaps offer you a refund on your ticket, but also a an attempt at recompense I will be showing for the first time to a public audience a film that I was involved in making "adventure motorcycling Marrocco" , this I assure you is totally about bikes. Again sorry that the programme advertised and the performance differed, let me know if you find this explanation satisfactory, thanks Nick Smith

I received a phone call this afternoon from (I think) Nick Smith and he's showing his Morocco film and Moto Siberia at 8pm on Saturday 16th July in Appletreewick Village Hall as recompense to those who were disappointed with Austin Vince :beerjug:

I went to the same venue last year, and whilst Austins presentation was not what I anticipated as an adventure motorcycle topic it was entertaining and quite funny, sounds like this years was more ambitious and best to be missed!
