Has anybody used this mapping onto a Garmin GPS with a European basemap?

www.gpsoz.com.au/tracks4australia

I have loaded it into MapSource, and it looks OK........but sort of all too eerily good, for free mapping....

It's not perfect, I know there is a lot of detail missing, and ( I think ) I understand about using the "wrong" basemap, but it seems OK for free.

THE PLAN......Bung it in a quest, and take it to OZ, and use it breezing up from Adelaide to Brisbane..........I know....I know....keep the sea to my right:D.....I'm basically just following the coast anyway.

What have I missed ??

Many thanks...:) :) :thumb

It is a freeware product

In metro areas it has only main roads but in rural areas it has most sealed roads, 2WD dirt roads and about 80% of 4WD tracks

It does not have address lookup and does not perform autorouting

haven't tried it yet - but i may switch when my CN becomes too old.

how much is the 2610 over here then burnie ? :D

AU$1389 with maps
SP2610 is superseeded so it is down to just a few units left

City Navigator Australia v7 is AU$349 on CD

zumo 550 is AU$1499

PS 2074, must be Turramurra or Pymble way

What have I missed ??

ive got a 2610, bought in the uk, got city nav australia and worldmap,

without worldmap installed when i zoom out more than 5 miles the gps loses all the road data as it will be working off the basemap which has no data for oz,

so i bought worldmap, with this installed on the gps i can see my route and a decent amount of roads when zoomed out.

worldmap is pretty cheap, i bought it off ebay usa, from seller 'everready_tom165' for 1/2 the price of the uk price, delivered in about 10days.

I also have worldmap for my Nav 2 (same as 2610). Are you telling me that I can still use my Nav 2 in Australia by using worldmap with City Navigator Australia, or do you mean I can use worldmap only ??

I will be moving to Australia in 2007 and will need street level mapping of major cities. I was selling my Nav 2 as it has the Atlantic basemap, but if I could use City Navigator Australia with it and be able to zoom out and still see where I am going I would be delighted and wouldn't need to sell it.

Last time I was in Aus I used my PDA in the car with TomTom 6 for PocketPC and Australia mapping which was brilliant, but it's not exactly a bike friendly setup. I am tempted by the TomTom rider as the mapping and user interface are great, its just the bike cradle that is crap and thats easily fixed with a Touratech mount.

Adelaide to Brisbane should be a good ride Jonnie, I drove down from Brisbane to Sydney and it took nearly 12 hours, it's a long way. Roads are great though and none of your UK congestion or endless roadworks.

Phil, you could always invest in a BMW Navigator 3 ?? By all accounts they are excellent.

As ever, thank you very much for the replies.

half-empty1, like Pukmeister, I would like to know if you mean that you have just worked off the WorldMap?

If I start spending, I might just wait until I get there, and then buy the cheapest car GPS that I can find, and put it in a tank bag....Why are GPS units so expensive in OZ?.....can you buy such a thing as a £100ish car GPS in OZ?

....It's been snowing in Melbourne apparently......:D

Thanks again........:thumb :)

im emigrating to oz in january 2007, 2610's cost a fortune out there and are cheap as chips here in the uk,

so i bought my 2610 with bike kit in the uk for 240quid and bought worldmap and city nav australia from ebay usa, half the price of uk suppliers :) i saved a fortune:D

so, yes you can use your UK 2610/nav2 in oz with worldmap and city nav australia loaded onto it,

5mile zoom and below the 2610 works from city nav australia and when you zoom right out above 5miles it works off the worldmap:thumb

so....just to confirm this :D

GPS for 100quid in AUS ????????

WorldMap on its own will not do autorouting

If you are thinking of just WorldMap then instead download Tracks4Australia, it has many more roads (altho still not minor metro roads), more accurate highways and better coastline. Still does not do auto-routing tho.

Running City Navigator Australia on its own will work fine you will just have very basic detail at high zoom levels.
On my GPSmap 276C I rarely use a zoom level above 2km (metric here :D ) even in country areas so the basemap should not really be an issue.

Models;
SP2610 is still available but running out
SP27xx were never brought into Australia
Believe that SP2820 may be bought in early next year
GPSmap 276C is available and still the fastest processor and sharpest screen
zumo 550 became available on 20 December

Best deal for in-car use is probably the StreetPilot c510 at AU$649
You can get the StreetPilot i3 discounted at AU$400ish but they are rubbish

City Navigator Australia v7 is 139 MB for all of Australia
v6 and v7 have good rural area coverage
If you have v4 or v5 then it is worth upgrading

City Navigator New Zealand v2 is 25 MB for all of New Zealand

so....just to confirm this :D

..So.............Oh never mind !!......:D

Thanks once again lads....especially Mr Pukmeister via PM.....

Sussed !!.....:thumb :)

Bugger, I have already ordered a Tomtom rider setup and Touratech mount. I prefer its 3D interface to my BMW Navigators 2D, but I will miss using Mapsource for planning the occasional big trip.

I can't justify the price of a Zumo at present, it looks good it's just overpriced for what it is IMHO. For that money I might as well go all-in and get a 2820.

Incidentally, how much is City Navigator New Zealand software selling for in Aus ??

CN Australia: AU$349 = £140.51

I may yet hang on to my Navigator 2 unless someone bites my hand off for it (which I doubt looking at the price of the 2610 recently). I could even fit both units to my GS with a bit of fettling as the rider is pretty compact, overkill really though.

I'm still amazed that despite the availability/price of big enough memory chips, Garmin only put a full world basemap into the 276C series rather than their entire range (or at least the ones capable of/sold for motorcycle touring). If they burned a world basemap image into their units it would solve this issue.

EDIT: Just found this on eBay. anybody tried it/use it? Any good?

that seems very cheap to me, i paid 100 odd quid for my maps of western europe and 100 odd quid for my usa maps,

ive used destinator 3 and destinator pn on my pda for about 3years,had it mounted on my bike in an otterbox, i found it absolutely fantastic once you get used to it, as with any software.

it guided me on 2 trips to europe, australia in may for a few weeks and a 3 month, 13000mile road trip around the usa in july-oct.

it was faultless, even in the middle of nowhere, i could open the POI and find a hotel, you can prepare your route on your pc with the destinator console then transfer the route to the pda, very much like mapsource.

as far as i know, they dont offer a worldmap and getting hold of destinator australia maps was pretty difficult, you seem to have to buy it in australia, as i could find it for sale nowhere else, i ended up finding it on limewire just for evaluation purposes you understand :D
