Had one of the fabled 1978 R100RS Motorsport models (yes, it had the dark blue seat) with the "S" nose fairing in recently, made especially for the australian police who then cancelled the order.
Allegedly with more horsepower than the standard R100RS.

Richard Hammond wanted to buy it and sent James May to look at it, but May said it fails to reach Hammonds very high standards. :D

Since when has Hammond had such high standards then ? Looks good to me. Poor old Hammond had to send James May round...... rather deal with Captain Slow anyhow.

So, is it still for sale then ?

That must be the one I saw for sale on eBay in the summer from a guy in West London - he wanted £6K as I recall. I went for something rather more affordable. Steptoe, it will be coming to you for a service in due course...

It's been bodged and worked on by someone without a clue about old BMW's

So, he apparently believed that it is/was more powerful than the standard R100RS?

How would it have been more powerful?

I don't believe any "blue seat hyperspace shortcut"-like claims, since the K100RS SE I used to have (with blue seat) wasn't more powerful than the black seat version :-)

Yeah but no but yours didn't have msport stickers , and that's important

The Motorsports (and an option on all airheads of the time) had the option of the 336 Camshaft. It was rumoured that they had a close ratio gearbox as well but i've no idea if this is true (this was also an option on all bikes of the period http://realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=0325&mospid=51646&btnr=23_0270&hg=23&fg=05). Certainly they all had kickstarters which is noticeably missing on Neils but that may have been due to the different spec of the Aussie bikes.

Engine tuning with a different camshaft obviously has the potential to increase the output, whereas gearing mods may deliver the existing output differently, ISTR.

But the "XXX police force cancelled order(s)" were, as the stories go, cancelled. Why? Most likely after road tests had shown that the performance was not satisfactory - otherwise the orders would not have been cancelled . . .

So as I see it, those bikes were proven NOT to go as expected :-)

Or another manufacturer offered better incentives.......

Orders cancelled due to costs at the time. Some the already made midles went to saudi, some sold off in the UK.

I had two of the old met police R80/7 special escort bikes when they were sold off, they had 55 BHP instead of the standard R80/7 50 BHP, and the difference was quite noticable when riding them .

Or they realised that bikes with an s fairing have a death weave at high speeds.

Only proper tank slapper i've ever had was with the RS fairing, and the same goes for two other people i know who've experienced the fabled BMW full on slapper. :D

My S fairing causes a weave at higher speeds. The old girls so asthmatic though that it's not an issue at the moment.

BMW Slapper? no different to any other slapper but you have an air of superiority while your in the saddle.
