I have now been using my AC 300 with a Zumo 550 and SE W850i phone (connected via Zumo) for a few months and this what I went through:

These are three stages I went through to get it to work.

1: I was advised by a well know AC distributor that all I needed to connect my AC to my Zumo was the AC BT module - no cables needed.
I tried this and it was rubbish, music quality poor, delay in sounds and the BT kept dropping.
Called AC and they said that won't work and I should have a cable from my Zumo to the AC and use the BT dongle for comm's from the AC to the Zumo (phone calls) i.e. Zumo sounds output via cable and voice input via BT module.

2: Added cable (more expense) as suggested above and perfect sound quality and no more breakdowns between AC and Zumo.
Still had problems with the BT dropping out and the only way to reset it was to turn the bike off, wait for the Canbus to power down and then back on again (did this 3 times in a row once :spitfire). It once lost the paring and I couldn't remember how to do it, so had to ride 500miles with no BT at all.

3. I have now decided that BT has to go so I went to my local BMW dealer who had the AC twin cable 'Y' piece (has been discontinued by AC. Even more expense).
I removed the BT AC dongle and single cable and fitted the Y cable (5 min job).
This set-up is perfect - no problems at all - note to AC "Do not discontinue the Y cable, BT is too unreliable"

Still have the occasional problem with the BT to my phone, but there is bugger all I can do about that and seems very common after reading the Zumo Forums.

Conclusion: Bluetooth is sh#te - avoid as much as you can.

I was very surprised when using ear plugs last weekend, that the sound quality of the AC is much better with them in, I could hear the lyrics to songs at 90mph.

One quick question where is the Zumo powered from? My money will be on the power source or location causing the issues as ive or we have fitted 1000's of Zumo's along side our dongles and never had any issues at all. So before you start slating the product the problem might not even our fault.

If the Zumo is wired direct to the battery the Zumo does not really power down as such so it can lose the connection to the dongles. This is common problem we find on Zumo's wired directly to the batteries, it does not do the correct power up sequence so its not looking for any devices when our dongles are firing out the signal it needs etc. It will do this on any BT headset not just our dongles if you were to do a bit more reseach on this matter.

So when we fit the Zumo's direct to switched power sources they are both doing the pairing process correctly when the Zumo's are powered up and the dongles are NEVER lost. We have also sorted customers bikes with this solution from when they have had similar problems.

Also we place the BT dongles as close to the Zumo as possible becuase it could be the signal strength of you sat on the bike could be lowering the strength a little. We fit the dongles on the plastics by the headstocks on the 1200GS's and up on the front of the tanks on the 1150's

If you need to speak with me for advice on this matter please free to phone me direct on 01926 431249 and please again do not slate our products when it might not even be our fault.

I don't recall slating your product - I said BT is rubbish and I don't think AC inventing BT - it is a general technology which isn't very good at all - that was my point.
I am very happy with my AC and would recommend one to anyone that asks.

My Zumo was fitted by BMW and is powered from the front loom pwr socket (canbus system). None of the kit is wired from the battery and is all on the canbus system. This is confirmed by the Zumo asking about power loss some time after I switch the bike off and the AC staying on for a while also.

I placed the BT dongle right at the front of the fuel tank, approx 12" away from the zumo under the plastics.

Once again, I am happy with the AC unit and I am not "slating" your products, even a support person at Zumo agreed with me that Bluetooth it is a poor technology, the issue could easily be at the Zumo end and not the AC unit.

Never had an issue with bluetooth dongle to Zumo in over a years use. The only issue I have sometimes is if the Zumo is on when I power the bike up and it sometimes fails to connect. Turning the Zumo off and then back on again always sort it out

Sounds good, although the time it takes to reboot the Zumo (seems to take forever) is a but frustrating.

This is similar to what I found. If I put the ignition on, allowing the Zumo to boot-up, and don't start the bike immediately, when I start the bike it must interupt the supply to the Autocom and causes the connection between the Zumo and BT Dongle to drop out. Most times it reconnects OK but sometimes it doesn't. If i start the bike immediately I have no issues.

Same for me. Zumo and AC connected to canbus. I find that i need to start the bike before i connect the zumo to the mount otherwise the AC connection either fails or connects but has no sound. Turning off the Zumo and re powering fixes this problem. Even if all is connected when you start the bike power must be interrupted for long enough to cause problems. Simple solution is to power off the Zumo until bike is started.

Try another phone! I had problems with BT dropping out with my Motorola, now I use a Nokia E65 and haven't had a single dropout. Pity as I preferred the Motorola. Since then there has been a firmware upgrade so maybe I should try it again.
