Autocom installation

Has anyone connected up an Autocom rider to pillion system to a GS yet? I am particularly interested in any issues with connecting into the single wire system, probably at the tail light so that it is interrupted by the ignition switch in use.

Hi John, got most things wired in now just be carefull how you do it. Originally plugged the autocom into the Aux socket. Now have it hard wired into the back of the socket, leaving the socket free.
The socket if you don't know is not permenantly live and powers down shortly after you turn the ignition off. Just watch the hazard light button when you turn the ignition off, when that goes out the bike has powered down, so it won't flatten the battery. For aux lights you can trigger a relay directly off your dip or main beam power supply there is enough tolerance in the circuits to drive the relay/s. I have both my heated vest plug and Optimate battery charger leads directly connected to the battery. I haven't experienced any problems in the 7 months I have owned the bike.

Thanks Gazza it's as I suspected as I also use the aux socket for a hKlan heated waistcoat. No problems with guarantees after such a mod?

I'll post some pics of my Autocom installation when I get home. It is soldered into the back of the aux power socket. The unit itself is on the back of the tank and the Motorola radio is in the tool tray. The tools are in a Touratech bag under the rear rack. I run the main helmet lead forward to the steering head where it nestles nicely in the little wire loop that retains the throttle cable (at least I think it is the throttle cable!).

I use my BMW heated jacket through the aux power socket with the autocom on with no ill effects.

Power to the aux socket is shut off 15 secs or so after the ignition is switched off which alleviates worrying about the autocom or radio remaining powered.

But be warned it is no where near as good as their original unit, most notably the lack of volume reduction on the music slot when talking on either phone or intercom. Bloody nuisance.

Here's the Autocom unit installation. The leads to the push-to-talk and helmet connection go upwards under the alloy bit covering the tank. Leads to the phone and iPod follow the same route and then into a handlebar mounted bag (Touratech) which I sling the gadgets into when on the move. The Autocom unit is just fitted to the service manual holder and has a couple of additional cable ties for added security. No problem putting the seat back on at all (seat is on the high setting).

The Motorola 2-way radio goes in the tool-tray. It is powered by the Autocom unit. I've covered it up to prevent it getting sprayed by gunk off the back wheel (awaiting arrival of Motorrad Concepts hugger).

As mentioned, the tools go in a Touratech bag under the rear rack. The Touratech handlebar bag is a bit pants to be honest. It doesn't have any structure to it so if you put anything remotely weighty in it (like an iPod and a phone) it sags all over the place and looks pants. I think I'll get a cross-bar and the Hein Gericke crossbar bag instead for a more secure and rigid fitting.

I have an INTARIDE rider to pillion unit and the relay for it fitted where the tool tray was.

Relay power i took from the blue/green cable on the black connector at the top of tobbers pic above. The one with all the coloured wires !!

My autocom ended up in the tool tray...all OK so far and yes I understand bluetooth is on its way...I'm sure a chat with Auotcom will give you the latest from the 'horses mouth'

Could you show a pic or describe how the soldering was done at the back of the power socket?

I'm v. keen to get this set up. I'll prob drop into Infinity in Guildford this pm.

Yes, it's fine soldered into the back of the accessory socket.

It's a bit tricky to get a pic of it (and my crap soldering melted various parts of the socket surround making it quite embarassing), but it's a pretty simple process.

From memory, I removed the accessory socket, exposed the connectors, checked which was positive and which was ground using a multimeter, and the soldered the Autocom wires on.

I've got the standard Autocom speakers in my helmet (Greg @ Infinity in Guildford fitted them v.neatly, but I dont think he is in today - I dropped in earlier as it happens). I have some Green Leopard in-ear headphone/earplug things coming to replace the ones in my helmet as I cant get the volume loud enough on the speakers when wearing high attenuation earplugs.

Just fitted my autocom today. Fits nicely under seat unit in front of relay. I have cranked thye volume up to max as that is pretty much impossible to get to now, but the Vox is easy enough. Wired into back of Aux Socket & earth point under seat.

If you really don't like the lack of mute on music then I have a Eurocom intercom that I'm looking to change for an Active 7 so that I can connect a phone (not interested in music while riding). Would you be interested in a swop?

The active 7 music volume reduces by about a half when talking or if the GPS kicks in?
Think you maybe confusing with the easi 7?

I had an installation like yours in mind (in fact this thread promted it!) But in discussing it with the dealer tonight, in anticipation of them hooking itup during the PDI, he suggested that the Autocom would be succeptible to water mounted where you have it.

Has yours suffered?

The other question I had was regarding the TT handle bar bag. Did you ever move to a bar and HG bag?

Hi Eddy,

Nope - no water problems at all. I know that the dealer is referring to water coming down the back of the tank and onto the Autocom. I'm sure this happens, but the Autocom unit is pretty rugged and no connectors are really exposed (i.e. they are at the sides and not in the direct path of water ingress). I've washed the bike loads of times and ridden in the p**ing rain a lot, and no probs.

I still have the Touratech floppy bag - am changing handlebars imminently - see separate thread....

Power for Autocom etc

I've been looking into how to get permanent and switched power for accessories. I see that some people have (i.e. Baz) have taken power from the "aux" socket under the seat. But looking at the wiring diagram for the R1200GS available on the web, and speaking to Park Lane BMW, this is not an Aux power source - its a diagnostic socket. Looking at the wiring diagram and talking to the dealer, it would appear that using this as a power source, you are actually drawing power from the computer system, which makes me very nervous!

Apparently power can be taken from a switched feed to the brake or headlight, and with a relay, used to switch power from the battery, which seems to be a much "safer" solution.

I have been told that I can buy the Aux power socket from BMW (part no. 7160 7685 121) for £30, and this connects near the front of the bike, but I havent got more information than this. This would be better as this swicthed feed stays live for around 20sec after engine has been killed.

Has anyone got any more information?

Maybe I should have said accessory socket. The one you plug a charger into below the seat on the left hand side of the bike (Page 93 of Manual). Its wired diectly to the battery so its not a problem. BTW it says live for 30 secs after the ignition is switched off.
