We are still using our Autocom Spa unit and it does exactly what we want, yes the leads are a pain and the Bluetooth from our Nav 5 cuts out occasionally, but we can both hear the sat-nav instructions & music and we can talk to each other when ever we want without having to press a button on say “cardo xxxxx”.

1. I guess rider and pillion still can’t hear music and sat-nav instructions with these newer devices?

2. Can you speak to each other without having to press anything or saying a command before hand?

3. Can you listen to music and then speak to each other while the music pauses or drops in volume?

4. Do people miss Autocom or are these new Bluetooth devices a step forward?

The reason for a possible change finally is our Spa system has started dropping out the left channel on a regular basis which is very annoying as the music volume increases dramatically when on both channels. If I could get a new Spa unit I would probably stick with this system as I have it in 3 helmets and my wife 2, which would get expensive with Cardo units!

Hopefully people who have done this change and who ride with a pillion can help?

I used an Autocom SPA unit for many years for Nav and also in conjunction with Kenwood's radios for bike to bike. Moved to Cardo Packtalk 3 or 4 years ago and to say it's been a revelation would be putting it mildly. It is brilliant compared to the old Autocom. You can just talk normally to your pillion or other riders in your group- no waiting to speak. Sat nav connection is flawless. Highly recommended.

Thanks for the reply.

If I don’t need mesh for bike to bike, is the freecom 4x good enough?

I changed from wired about 10 years ago, after my wife let her cable get caught around the rear wheel. So am on my third Cardo now, just bought an edge. To answer your questions in order:

1. Rider and Pillion can share music and Nav instructions, but depends on which units you buy. More expensive more options, look on the Cardo site for comparison of the units.
2. Yes, to speak just speak, only thing with the Cardo units is there is no side tone, so you can't hear yourself talking, not an issue once you are used to it
3. Yes
4. No, don't miss the autocom at all, the new devices are streets ahead, as I said I am on the third iteration and each one is better than the last.

That’s good to hear, I have just taken the Spa unit apart and had a fiddle, doubt it will work but I will try it out soon. If it doesn’t work, I will get a Cardo system. Watching lots of reviews (which don’t always make things clear) I just need to decide which one to get, from what I see the Freecom 4x has everything that the Packtalk Neo does except the Mesh connection and as I doubt I will ever need it, I am inclined to get the cheaper version unless people convince me otherwise??

I use mesh as a comms between myself and my pillion as it is a better connection and more robust than bluetooth. But I sometimes ride with a mate, so we also connect via Mesh.

If I was still working I would definitely get the better system but having decided to retire extra early as I wasn’t enjoying my job we need to be more careful with money. Although if it’s much better I will spend the extra money!
