Hi

AUTOGLYM MOTOR CYCLE CLEANER

i just want to know if anyone uses this stuff on there alloy wheels and if so has it tarnished them in any way. i have an 03 1150 GS now with tarnished wheels which i think is a result from using this cleaner. it is supposed to be non corrisive and all that stuff. anyone any ideas??

THats the stuff I've been using on my VFR for the past 3 years with no ill effects. called into SPC last week to ask what to use on the Beemer spoked wheels and they also recommended it. Used it twice on mine so far no probs yet, although the wheels werent pristine when I got the bike.

Hi Oatsy…………..

Ya know the product, tried it on my (company) car wheels first before the GS and had the same problem. Trouble is bet it contains some form of detergent.

Know it’s a bit late but always use soppy water BUT NO WASHING UP LIQUID! It contains salt! (I work in the car trade) Buy a good quality wash & wax etc. (Because you’re worth it!)

Looks like a job for Solvol!

Good luck with ya wheels.

The thing is i have had the wheels off and cleaned them with AUTOSOL and its coming back.

Bumcrack advice...

Now rinse!

I reckon it's OK. I've kept the faith with the stuff myself. So too have Yamaha and Team Reve Ducati.

Most of these things are cunning blends of phosphoric acid, glycerine, and anionic detergents. The highest acid content ones are the real metal finish munchers. AutoGlym M/C Cleaner is right at the friendliest end of the scale.

Don't be kidded though that it as truly pH neutral as something like Johnsons baby bath. The hydrogen ions won''t attack your anodised sections in the time or concentrations available to them (or not that you'll be able to see without an electron microscope.) That is if and as long as you rinse it off decently within the time advised. RTFM etc.

Woe betide though...if you spray it on, forego the rinse and imprudently let the stuff evaporate leaving behind a concentrated gummy autoglymic acid sediment ...which it will.

If you lather up your armpits and crotch and then spend a week without rinsing you'll get a very nasty rash which even matron will have to shake her head over. Same goes for yer bike!

You'd be much better off staying crusty. Which is an honourable enough ukGS'er thing to be...so I've heard.

There's a wee review here ...but it's a bit wishy-washy if you ask me.

Is that an automatic system or do you still have to get your hands wet.

Life is to short for polishing bikes, there meant for riding.

AUTOGLYM MOTOR CYCLE CLEANER

AUTOGLYM make a a cleaner just for alloys maybe you should try that.
also there visor cleaner does not work on iridium visors so don't go there!!

A lot of detergents turn aluminium alloys black.....or white..........in fact a lot of chemicals turn a lot of aluminium a lot of colours 'cos aluminium isn't exactly a stable metal.......

Stick to steel........

I use autoglym bike cleaner - no problems. But as already said, you need to rince all cleaning agents off thoroughly.
I NEVER use an alloy wheel cleaner, they nearly all contain an acid (phosphoric most of the time). Since acids react with aluminium oxide (which is what an anodized lump of ally is covered with) they will expose bear aluminium, wich react rapidly with water/oxygen to give a nasty mess.

Of course, you could always wash the wheels in nitric acid, that converts aluminium to the oxide....but the rest of the bike may dissapear then (along with your hands, any concrete the bike may be standing on.....

I suggest you stop cleaning the wheels, get a good layer of mud on them and no one can see the stains.
