Alright gents,

I've recently bought Autosmart Smart wheels, wheel cleaner, and without thinking used it on my gold spoked wheels which left a cloudy haze and streaks in places.

I cleaned the wheels again using normal car wash soap, and once dry used WD-40 and a microfibre cloth to remove most of the hazing but streaks still remain.

Is there another product I could use that might help remove the remaining streaks or at least reduce their visibility.

Any help or advice on this matter much appreciated.

Regards
Gordon

Did you use it neat or did you water it down?

A lot of these cleaning products are corrosive.

I left Muc Off on too long and it had a similar effect on brightwork.

Probably not much help but a few years ago I used a cheap Carplan wheel cleaner on my 90th anniversary wheels. Stained them white, I never managed to get rid of it, tried all sorts but the damage was done. Good luck :thumby:

Try some car polish.

You’ve damaged the finish - that’s it now

GS wheels don’t need aggressive wheel cleaners as they don’t get the brake crap baked in like car wheels.

Just use shampoo and loads of water..

But sadly your wheels have been “refinished”

Morning gentlemen and thanks for the quick replies. Aa expected the outcome doesn't sound great for getting these streaks out, I did read that using a mix of vinegar and water can neutralise sodium hydroxide which is a common ingredient in these wheel cleaners, so I'll try that today to see what difference it makes. Not holding out much hope though.

Is there a company that can re-anodise these wheels and refit the spokes/balance etc? Might just be less hassle to get them sprayed gold instead? Decisions decision?

Frustrated for you - if it helps I did the same years back

Lesson learned

Yes Vinegar (Acetic Acid) will neutralise the Sodium Hydroxide but Acetic acid is classed as a weak acid so will be less aggressive than a strong acid. Sodium Hydroxide is classed as a strong alkali (base)

So, next question, does anyone know the correct paint code for this gold colour or where I might be able to purchase it from? Getting as close a match as possible might help hide the streaks enough to keep me happy. Cheers.

I have had similar on 1150Gs wheels and managed to clean it up with Solvol Autosol polish. Got to be worth a try at least.

I would write to the manufacturer of the wheel cleaner and complain.

I once cleaned my Ducati wheels that had gold anodised floating disc carriers.
Whatever I used virtually instantly removed the anodised finish.

Ever since that day, I have been very careful with bike cleaning products.

Alternatively you could just ride the thing and ignore it :thumby:

Bet they were not anodised gold though……

They are anodised, not painted….you will need a specialist wheel builder that’s able to re spoke GS /a wheels as they are quite tricky

bilt hambers wheel cleaner is a good alloy wheel cleaner. I dont think you will get the staining out.
