I have the Twalcom lights fitted to my F800GS with the toggle switch. I want to install the autoswitch that I just got instead and need some advice on installing it, I hope someone can help.

This is how my spots are currently wired in:

Here is the link to the Autoswitch install instructions.

This is what I think I need to get to:

My question is with regard to the connection at the Aux light relay point 85... I need to connect the autoswitch 'relay control' wire (violet) to the Aux light relay at point 85 but this already has the two black wires from the Aux spot lights and the grey wire to the battery.

How should I connect the violet wire? Do I need to rewire all four into a new connector or can I tap into one of these three pre-existing wires?

Also, where is the best place to tap into the 'Turn Signal Cancel' wire? A photo would be useful. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Hi there

As an electrician I think I can comment on this one but Im sure that you will get a thousand posts on how to do it but anyway here goes.

The best way would be to wire the spots directly to ground (the frame or earthing point) and wire the relay to ground as this will ensure that you get a better ground and not try to have loads of wires crammed on to one terminal.

If your struggling or would like to talk it through you could always pop down and I wouldn't mind doing it for you.

I wired some lights in via a switch and a feed from the main beam via a diode so that you get maximum illumination when the main beam is on.

Anyway have fun and enjoy riding the bike.

Regards

Mark

Hi:

Cheers. That's what I've been told. If I remove the terminal at 85 that also removes the grey wire to the negative terminal on the battery, what do I do with this wire?

Also, how should I ground the relay at 86? Does this mean I tap into the ground wire from the autoswitch?

Can you post pic's of how you do this. :beerjug:

I was looking to use the indicator cancel as a PTT switch which is more subtle than my current solution.

Still deciding if I have the minnies to attempt it myself or play safe and have someone else do it for me? I'm almost certain I have it figured out and it does seem pretty easy. Either way I'll post some pics.

I finally got a response from Autoswitch about further installation advice. Apparently, they have a beta tester for the new AS7 fitted to the F800GS and its the same. Here's what they sent me:

Good fortune here, going down the emails I found this from a beta-test installer doing a new prototype AS7. The wiring would be the same for AS-6.

Hello Raul:

I finally got all the parts to install the AS7 (even though the Flood I got quit working and had to send it back for replacement).

I took pics and labeled them. Will attach them. Installed on 2009 BMW F800GS. I poked and prodded under the seat in the wire bundles looking for the turn cancel switch wire (blue with white stripe) and the high beam switch (all white), but never did find them. So I went to the right hand controls.

I removed the back cover (2 torx screws). Probed the blue w/ white striped wire (got a hint from some wiring schematics online) and clicked the cancel switch. BINGO! I ended up having to remove the whole switch housing (4 screws and the throttle adjustment tension screw), because I could not get the clips (up against the switch housing) to unhook. The connectors have little "snaps" that hold them to the housing, and there is not much room to move them away, but getting a little screw driver up and behind it and lifting that little tab near the bottom is possible.

When the connectors are apart the right hand wire bundle is moveable to where it easier to work on. THERE ARE 2 TINY LITTLE TORX SCREWS AT THE TOP OF THE HOUSING---DO NOT TAKE THEM OUT IF YOU REMOVE THE OTHER SCREWS--I AM STILL TRYING TO GET THEM LITTLE $%*&RS BACK IN! :-)

I thought of just tapping into the wire, but that would leave a big bulging area when back together, so I tinned and soldered (not my best work) the AS7 Trigger Sense wire onto it. "Liquid taped" it and then bound it all back up with friction tape. When I was feeding the trigger wire, I also brought the LED Light wire through and and extra wire to go to the high beam for future placement of another AS7 (right now just going to its own relay when the high beam is on for the Spot light).

The LED Light has a nice little fit underneath the right hand switch housing and above the brake assembly (didn't take a pic, but can). Perfect spot for it.

Under the "hood" I already have one relay for the Centech Fuse Box that turns on with the ignition, from which I brought up the power wire. So, technically, I don't think it is actually running on the Canbus. ??? I had an old setup with a dual relay on it. Whittled it down to fit in the area in front of the airbox and connected up the relays according to the diagram that came with the AS7. Twice, so that I can run the Spot and the Flood seperately.

I have the SPot connected to the AS7 right now, but will put the floods on it when I get it back. I have not had any problems, so far, this week. Works exactly like it is suppose to. Except I changed it to the double tap, and can't get it back to the press and hold, which I want to use when the flood is back on. Not that it is a big deal.

Double tap and the Aux lights are ON!

Well I finally got around to installing the Autoswitch... I have absolutely no mechanical skills and even less electrical skills but I managed it.

I originally followed the wire down and cut into the loom where I thought my objective wire was buried... I tapped into it but no luck. Despite it being the correct colour it wasn't it, so I tapped in further up. I used the connectors provided plus one or two extra from Maplins...

The red power wire from the Autoswitch was tapped into the yellow wire inside the main light (no picture of this)

I cut this artery open to expose it's guts VERY carefully...

2-3.jpg

But... this wasn't the correct wire so I removed the connector repaired the wire by tinning the wire and wrapped it all back up...

Accessed the CORRECT wire here instead...

6-2.jpg

...and tapped in using a connector...

7-1.jpg

I'll probably get some wire wrap at some point to tidy it up a bit more?

Not settled on the location of the LED yet so I may adjust it's position in time? And that's all there was to it... pretty easy in retrospect and it works great.

Hi Steve

I am trying to fit a AS7 to a F650GS Twin for a set of Auxiliary lights.

The pictures are no longer available and I was trying to locate the Indicator Cancel wire under the seat.

Can you remember the colours by any chance.

Many thanks

Andrew.

Pictures

Hi Steve,
Is there any way of getting the pictures back? I have ordered the autoswitch ( mainly because I liked your set up on your You Tube video ) and the pictures would be very handy.
