As I am a gps numpty can someone help me please. I have the street pilot III and I want to power it from the aux plug. I have a BM plug and a power cable I got with GPS (2nd hand) the wire has a black, blue and brown wire. Can some one tell me which is which. The manual says that the cable should have 4 wires brown, white, black and red. red being power and black being ground. Have I got the wrong cable? or can the one Ive got be used?

If the cable is second hand (meaning, someone has used it before), you might want to peel back the outer shroud - the black cover - and see if the red wire is there, but was just cut off at the point where it enters the shround.

If you don't find it, no problem - just order another cable. You can get them from Garmin. Be aware that Garmin makes two different 'qualities' of power cable for the SP III. The one that comes with the cigarette lighter adapter on the end is intended for indoor use, and has a fairly thin plastic shroud. The one that comes with bare wire ends is intended for motorcycle use, and has a thicker, more durable rubber shroud. The cable with the bare ends is not expensive.

Thanks for that Michael. I have pulled the outer shroud back and there are only the 3 wires. think i will play it safe and order a new cable, then get it wired in by a dealer ( new bike dont want to risk any trouble with warranty) will have to stick with batteries for the time being.
