This is a really odd one. Battery shows 14.2V on the dash. I plug in the air compressor, with the ignition on, and it momentarily starts then stops. I have access to a 2020 RT and the exact same happens apart from some times it does run. I have also tried with the engine on and the same as with only power on.

Manual is no use in fault finding and I'm stumped.

Any thoughts???

Can bus socket will not run an airman ,you need a flylead direct from the battery

This. The socket is current limited. Suggest you fit an extra socket direct off the battery via a 10A fuse. You can use this for things like your compressor. You can also use it to charge your battery using a standard (non CANbus compatible) charger.

Ho yus. You can buy a complete kit on ebay or Amazon for not-a-lot. This search term - "12V fused cigarette socket" - turned up just the job on Amazon for £7.99. Mine sits under the passenger seat.

Thanks for the reply's and guidance.

I can't believe the airman comes with a din compatible socket but doesn't work on a bike. Live and learn ...

I'm going to get shot with all my purchases for the new bike ....

Another quick question when I remove the neg & pos battery connections to install the ones going to the 12V socket does this cause the bikes electronics to 'freak' and is there a procedure I should follow?

What the good gentlemen above describe is a pretty common setup

I use a Ctek charger with a fly lead directly to the battery for charging and running my airman

Others use different chargers or pumps but the setup is the same

And, connect the +ve lead to the stud with a red cap to the right of the battery. Dont bother trying to get the battery out to get at the hidden positive terminal.

I run an Optimate flying lead from the battery then use a suitable connection for the pump, as others have said, the pump overloads the Canbus.

The fact that BM decided that the current limit for the socket was set at 5Amps was a bit of a cock-up when you think that a small compressor is probably one of the most likely things you’d want to plug in. These typically run at about 7 Amp at full load. Doh!

I suspect the engineers knew exactly what they were doing, if BMW sold a compressor it would have been designed to work with the DIN outlet.

It would work on older non can-bus bikes.
You can also wire a secondary din socket wired (and fused) directly to the battery. I did :) pretty useful.

SAE plug wired directly to the battery. This powers compressors, heated gear, accepts a battery charger and is used as a back up if needed whilst out camping. Win, win. The only real question is where to fix the plug. I use an Optimate rubber type plug with a weatherproof cap attached to the frame, left side just below the plastic triangular cover which makes it easy to get to, especially for my heated gear. I've never used the Canbus BMW socket, no need of it. My 21 GSA has a factory USB on the right side of the cockpit. I use it to power my Ram Mount wireless phone charger/holder which switches itself of with the ignition after a minute or two avoiding accidental discharge of the battery.

For additional lights and horn I went with the CanSmart system which enables control via the OEM switches. Again it shuts down with ignition off. So far so good, though when the time comes I will upgrade the bike battery from its relatively small capacity to one with a little more storage. Hope this helps.
