Just bought an 06 1200. Real dumb question, what use is the power socket on the n/s of the bike. I've got bog all in my house that would even plug into this. What mod can I do to make it useable??
Thanks for that. Just found the thing the night and thought what the hell am i gonna do wi that. Will check out TT and Nippy Normans. Is there a limit to the power you can draw tho this??

I have an 05 model and have continuing problems with the aux sockets. Hopefully the software on later models will have fixed the issue. My problem relates to the overly-zealous computer which seems to recognise my Autocom unit as a 'fault' and cuts all power to the accessory sockets after a few minutes. It is an issue well-known to Autocom, who have given me a fix - trick the computer by connecting into the headlamp unit. All to no avail however, as successive BMW dealers have refused Autocom's advice and offered their own 'solutions' ... It is a shame I am so technically inept myself, otherwise I could have easily fixed the damn thing using Autocom's instructions.
Anyway, never mind all that. What I really wanted to say was that the aux sockets on BMWs do take standard 'bike-size' accessory plugs. However, they don't lock in place as well as BMW's own, and can work their way loose. You might do better to fork out for some OEM ones.
There is a maximum load. You'll find it in the owner's manual (sorry I don't have mine in front of me). It should be fine for most normal usage, e.g. Autocom, bike to bike, GPS, etc. I have even had a compressor running off mine.
Cheers Mate that was helpful. Still finding my way round this thing. Now that my best mate and his missus have kid I now find myself havin to go on euro trips on my own and wanted summit that I could carry camping gear on to minimise the impact of the £/Euro crunch. Not that I am big into that sort of thing but fancied the versatility that the GS could offer..............still learning

In the meantime, five amps is the limit. So that'll probably rule out the kettle, if you find that as one of the things in your house to try to plug in.
five amps is only the limit for the aux outlets wires to CANBUS. This won't be enough to run some air compressors and other stuff. You can, however, have the aux outlet wired directly to the battery, then the five amp limit doesn't apply.
