auxiliary lights and the law?

As a previous correspondant stated, nothing to do with MOT, everytning to do with construction & use.

Auxiliary spotlights or driving lights must extinguish when one dips, and may be fitted with a switch to inhibit their use. Thus, only available with main beam.

Auxiliary foglights are normally only available with sidelights or dipped headlights & extinguish with main beam.
Their use is prohibited except in conditions of fog or falling snow.

MOT do not check for either of the above, because they are not manditory lights.

Myke

Interesting. Mine are wired to stay on with both dipped and main beam.

Fog lights are normally wired via a relay triggered by the "side" lights or dipped beam plus a switch as their use is only legal if the side lights or main beam are on and vision is restricted. If, as is the case with many cars, the dipped beam turns off when the main beam is turned on this would mean the fogs go off with main beam.

As, on the GS, the dipped beam stays on all the time, the fogs stay on all the time. There is no reason why the fogs should go off with the main but in practice it makes no sense to use the main beam in fog as the light is just reflected back at you. If they are wired to turn off with main it does not really matter when used as intended, i.e. FOG lights.

Most of the W*nk*rs in their Beemer cars drive with fogs on all the time with no obvious reason and seem immune to the law so it would have to be a very anal copper or a biker who badly failed the attitude test to get done for a couple of small lights turned on to aid safety.
