I was riding along a stretch of roadworks where the speed was restricted to 50mph. Traffic was doing exactly that (speedo reading) and I did what I always do with my car - ie selected ave mph on the computer then re-set. On the car this immediately sets to the speed i am travelling. However, on the bike I got readings that were about 5mph slower than I was travelling.
Obviously this device does not do what it should?
Anyone else tried this?

Best you call BMW Emergency Assist. Get them to recover the bike to the nearest dealer.

It's a device, that when sight seeing, allows you to see the scenery that is otherwise a blur at the speed you thought you were travelling at.

Your speedo is deliberately set 10% high to stop you speeding (all manufacturers do the same) you can see it if you use a GPS while driving. The average speed might be the accurate speed. The odometer is set correct as well.

well my clocks must be spot on,as the zumo660 says i am doing 70mph,the speedo says exactly the same speed.

By law the speedo tolerance is -0% to +10%. Manufacturers set the speedo to read high because they have no choice and the fuel consumption looks better than it really is.

Usually on modern vehicles the speedo reading is high as stated, this will be adjusted from a much more accurate reading within the engine management system. The odometer and other calculated values use the value within the engine management system so are much more accurate.

Euro cars/Bikes should be about 5% high, which ensures that the driver/rider cannot sue the manufacturer for driving at the speed indicated on the speedo if they are stopped by a camera - I think there was a European Directive in around 1991, or something similar as I recall.

They all do that Sir.

Just use a sat nav and compare, you will see the difference.
