Does AVG Free still exist? I'm looking to set up a used PC for my Mum and wanted to install AVG Free (which I've always been led to believe was preety good.
Looked everywhere on their site to no avail. Can someone point me in the right direction? If not could somebody recommend an alternative (free) anti-virus package?

Yes
but most are using Avast now
still free

A lot here who used to use AVG have moved to Avast! (their exclamation mark, not mine)
That's still free and it's pretty good to (although I think there is still a supported free version of AVG)

AVG started giving problems for me, on several pcs, since v8.

now moved to Avast :)

I'm still on free AVG, 'twas recommended to my by some bloke called Fanum.
Does this mean I've got to change to Avast nowdays then ?

:blast Do keep up my dear chap :)

AVG was great.....but it got a bit iffy when they went to v8 (as cookie said) and there were some problems getting the daily updates......I guess they were trying to 'encourage' people to switch to the paid for version.......after that, people seemed to migrate across to Avast(!) which is working well and apart from the annoying bloke who interrupts the porn each night by announcing that the 'virus database has been updated', it seems fine :thumb2

Sorry, I must try harder.

I've just checked and I'm on 8.5 but not noticed any problems so far.
I'll see how it goes but this porn interrupting bloke sounds a bit over the top.
Thanks for the advice, appreciated.

As long as you're getting daily updates and not getting any hassle there, I'd see no real reason to change tbh.......the interface for AVAST! is a bit whizzier but that's all......TBH the simpler the better for me.....as long as it works, job done :thumb

PS do check in the menus in your avg about the updates....look at when the last one was just in case it did stop getting them and you hadn't noticed :)

They fixed the update issue a couple of patches ago, so AVG Free is still good to go, for those who are afraid of change/cba (waiting for Windblows 7 so no point changing for 2months)

fahrkin chahrnts..

If you right click on the wee blue Avast! ball, then..

program settings>sounds>settings, the one you want to disable is "Automatic VPS update" which plays the annoying "virus database has been updated" or change it to something nice :D

You can always tell him to STFU by going into the settings and turning off sounds :rob

I'm still looking for the Joanna Lumley BJ quote though :(

Thank you, I just checked and last update was earlier this evening so fingers crossed and all seems to be well and tickety boo.
