AVG Version 8.0 probs - Help

I'm trying to install AVG version 8.5 on my PC thats running vista (32 bit home).
I acn't install the new version over the old and I can't seem to un-install the old version (8.0) as it keeps coming up with an error that seems to be to do with a back-up file.
Anyone had similar problems and or sussed out a way around it?
Version 8.0 no longer seems to be updating properly on my machine:(

Try installing AVG 8 over your existing installation, reboot and then try the uninstall again.

or buy a Mac ;-)
 
I ran ABG 8.0 for several months (installed from a magazine cover disk) without problems. It suddenly came up with the invitation to upgrade to 8.5 so I ignored it for a few days then told it to install the upgrade.which it did without problems. I'm running Vista Home Premium 32 bit which, apart from IE8, is fully up to date. All that AVG ever finds is tracking cookies so either it's not doing much or I'm not visiting enough dodgy websites. Version 8 probably won't update because it has been superceeded. A screenshot of the error message when trying to upgrade (press Alt and SysRq together to copy the screen to the clipboard, then paste into any text processor) might help the experts to diagnose the problem.
 
I had a couple of occasions when AVG would loose it's key so I needed to completely unistall it before then reinstalling it.

Have a look at http://www.avg.com/download-tools you will find AVG Remover there.

Teaching grandma to suck eggs but don't try to install a different anti-virus program on top of an existing one - always uninstall first. :thumb2
 
Cool, thanks for the tips guy's. I'll have a play when I get home and try to uninstall using the online tool. If it still don't work I'll post up the message that appears (cheers bear always wondered how to do that:))
 
If you manage to uninstall your old AVG, before you load the new one, how do you feel about giving this a try?

Just install it, it starts straighgt away. Don't initiate a scan, it's already doing one. Give it maybe thirty hours of your normal computer use, including on/off time, then see if there's any difference in your machine's performance (Speed).

I'd be interested to hear your comments, if you're willing to try it.

I put it on my machine on Thursday. AMD Turion 64bit dual core CPU, 2GB ram, Vista Home Premium. From hitting 'Enter' after typing password, it was taking up to about three minutes before it was ready to use.

Earlier tonight when I switched on, from hitting Enter, max 45 seconds and it wa ready to go,

Anyone else fancy giving it a go, feel free. Again, I'd be interested in your comments after 24-36 hours of it being installed.

(Uninstall your current AV before installing Panda, but keep the installation files in case you do want to swap back.)

Prior to doing the below, download and install 'Unlocker' from here -

then if you are trouble uninstalling AVG (or any other program) go into the 'Program Files' folder and delete it manually by 'right clicking' on the 'GRISOFT' folder and selecting 'delete', when you do, at some point you will get a message saying that the file cannot be deleted because it is in use etc. at that point the 'Unlocker' program will kick in to help you delete the program:thumb2

Yeah, i'd be interested to give that a go as my machine is dffinately slowing down. The problem is I still can't uninstall bloody AVG:mad:
I'm going to have to try emailing their support I reckon.

Cheers Dickieboy, I'll try that. I wondered if you could actually do it manually so to speak.
 
Arrghhhhh

I still can't get rid of the bloody thing.
I've installed unlocker and tried just delete the program folder and let unlocker do it's thing, nowt happened. Ithen tried to unlock the files then delete them individually. Still no go.
I get this..........

If you go Control Panel\Programs\Stop a Program from running at Startup you should be able to stop AVG (or anything else for that matter) from automatically starting. Once you've told Windows that AVG shouldn't start then try restarting the computer and uninstalling it via Control Panel. If that doesn't help then look on computer magazine cover disks for a removal tool.
