.avi movie file compression software?

Downloaded www.winavi.com so that I could convert .avi movie files to .mpeg. Worked fine but to upload the movies on to Smugmug, I need to shrink/compress them due to the 8mb limit per upload. BTW, this is so easy to use, takes but a few seconds to download with broadband & to convert files.

Any ideas of (preferably free?) software that can be downloaded?

Also, any other options to the www.winavi.com software that converts .avi to .mpeg & has a compression ability/feature included?

Not sure about this, but try DVDSanta.

It does most video formats to DVD etc. Perhaps it will do your mpegs too. Does everything else I ask it.

DivX

I have some movies encoded in DivX and it seems very good, I have a DVD of the long way round, its got 7 x 58 min programmes on it and its not full, I only have the reader but there is a writer version.
