Depressed young person (generic) Call for teacher suicide training
A teachers' union calls for more suicide awareness training to
enable members to pick up on warning signs.

WHY oh Why??? should it be the responsibility of the teachers?

Don't they have enough to do to deal with the, Rude, Bad Mannered, unruly, Undressed, Chavish, "Milly", "Don't Fcuk wiv Me!" Slabbering BRATS of todays namby pamby society?

If their own Parents can't be arsed to bring up their kids and keep an eye on them well why the fcuk should the rest of us??
BY all means if a child is seen to be depressed or behaving inan out of character way, make a note and send it to a school nurse or as they'll need in years to come School Psychologists! TEachers have enough to do!

My step daughter (12) has had the "knowledge Fairy!" come to visit! 7 or 8 months ago she asked questions then all of a sudden "Bingo" she knows all the answers, I hate doing it but I keep proving that she doesn't! Hopefully for her own good? and always In a gentle way and never to embarass her and she's calming down a bit now, but, it's been a struggle! I hope I'm doing the right thing but it's all about achieving a balance isn't it?
A couple of times I was ready to put her over my knee and skelp her arse for the way she talked to her mum!
Sensibly I didn't do that I gave it the really loud shout "GET TO YOUR ROOM!"and the "YOU'RE GROUNDED!" and will be indefinitely if you continue to talk to your mum like that!
It has worked so far but the dirty looks ya get at the time??? "If Daggers could Kill and all that sort of thing!" But an hour later she apologises and climbs back on my knee and has a wee sob on the shoulder. Thank Feck!

My best mates wife is a teacher and she loves her job but has been threatened a couple of times
One of which was by a 15 year old who punched the wall by her head to illustrate her point. In the winter months she reckons that she will do a 60 hour week teaching english, via time at the school plus at home, prepping lessons and marking etc etc

Anyone else concur? Well I suppose I did wander a bit there but Well in that case do you concur with any particular bit of this post Hows That :aidan

Not worthy of a rant IMHO.

I would have thought teachers were ideally placed to spot the warning signs, especially in families where the parents can't be bothered.

Fair Do's Steve But WHY ??? Why should they have too? It's not their responsibility?? IS it??

What I am meaning is:- If they train a teacher to be alert to these "signs" and a child still does commit suicide??? and a teacher has missed the "signs" then is the teacher then going to be held liable in our modern "it's not my fault" society?

HAven't teachers these days enough to worry about with child protection and Human rights etc, etc

Absolutly worthy of a rant! imho:rob
Its not the teachers responsibility to look for any suicidal tendancy or sign's in thier class room, they are there to teach. This is why ,can't be arsed parents get away with so much, they are always looking for someone else to blame while they are down pub scratching there idol arses!
I know teachers are in good position to notice anything worring in any of their charges and im sure many if not all do report to the relivant people if there is anything that causes them concern. but its only my opinion that teachers have a hell of a difficult job to do now given the loutish attitude a fair number of school kids now have toward thier elders. I wouldn't be a teacher today for 100k per annum, and im deadly serious about that.
Good Rant Jay.:thumb
ya gurny get ye!:thedummy

Who the fcuk has these ideas?

the guys that you helped to get elected and the zealots in social engineering who have insinuated themselves in the fringes of government.
The real problem of parental responsibility will never be addressed because no-one wants to deal with the policing of root core of making parents accountable for their children's welfare. In the one area that the nanny state needs to be a nanny, it fails.
It is easier to victimise teachers for failing the kids. A minority can be scapegoats and held accountable for what is government and societal failures.

A good teacher will recognise such signs and realy their concerns to a relevant authority...this is where things become unstuck - if a child is 14 years old or more then social services et al don't want to know.

As for violence in classrooms - 95% of young people are decent, hardworking and respectful ... this is what keeps me going in to work each day :D

Teenagers will always want the last word or the last look - you won't ever stop that :thumb2

Sorry but I just have a horrible feeling that a lot of todays problems with society is caused by too many people medling in the parents responsibility to bring up there children.
When I went to school Teachers instilled knowledge and most of all responsibilty it was education to open minds not just to memorise certain snapshots to pass meaningless exams.
Teachers taught and Disciplined those that did not want to bother they were not allowed to disrupt others.
They were never scocial workers or replacement parents, when the teachers unions voted with other Liberal idiots to ban corporal punishment they were sowing the seeds of todays antisocial behaviour.
You now have kids actually saying you cant punish me I'll report you to Childline or whatever,so why should parents bother when Liberals are telling them when and how to bring there kids up and then not backing them up ie giving contraception and abortions without parental consent.
Teachers and schools should stick to teaching and nothing else and perhaps dress as though they are a top profession and not in some contest to blend with the pupils to make them feel inclusive.

Believe me - teachers also would love to just be able to teach children. Read up on Every Child Matters - this is where the future is - the nanny state has taken over

As a secondary school teacher of 24 years experience, new demands are made on us as a profession every week. the welfare of the pupils i teach is always at the front of my mind and yes there are some you would prefer not to have to face every day but in reality 99% are good children who do want to learn and for some school may be the only stable part of their lives. Unfortunately some Parents shirk responsibility for their offspring as soon as they leave their homes and expect teachers to not only educate but to discipline and teach right from wrong. will it ever change? No it can only get worse. Society as a whole has made these kids the way they are. The buck should stop with our inept and out of touch politicans who have the power to stop this and change standards. for the better of everyone. As for billy no mates, Waterloo road, Grange Hill and teeachers is not a true reflection of teaching, for a start no one i know has a class of less than 24 teenagers, everyone swears including the teachers and i've never in all my years met a teacher who would wear jeans and no tie to work.
PS wish it was dry so i could go out on my bike - soft teachers!!!!!!!!!!!PPS feel free to correct y grammar, punctiation and what ever!!!!!!

For a start I have never watched one episode of Grange Hill have seen snippets on TV awards but thats all, it fits in the same not to watch bin as all the dross soaps etc.
My only experience of meeting teachers is through my daughters education and wife who was a Caretaker for many years, and with a few exemptions I was not impressed.
Most shools target 2 ends of the spectrum the top end to keep up in the league tables and the bottom end (basicaly those that are now allowed to disrupt everyone else in class just so it looks good on the investors in people plaque) those in the middle are just left to get on with it.
What I do notice is the fact that they are quick to strike for money but not so quick when it comes to other important education issues, like exclusions and violence etc.
and pleeeease dont tell me they have'nt dummed down as this backed up by the numbers of students taking any of the A level Sciences Math etc or basicaly anything that stretches the mind.
Good old media studies.

understand your feelings but here in NI we have excellent educational facilties which is borne out on the best exam results in the UK but yes i agree qualifications have been dumbed down but thats the fault of the Government and all the education boards leas etc to make it look better for them, in reality teaching has got no easier in fact harder through continual revisions of curriculums, exam boards etc etc and etc. Its the pop idol world we now live in, you don't have to agree with it but that's the job and i do still enjoy it. Where else could i teach a subject like Motor vehicle Studies and teach boys who care less about everything else how to ride a moped then a motorbike then maybe someday a GS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Has its bonus's ( is that a word). Last word, 10 years ago all my mates would slag me about doing a womans job, now not one of them would swop for all the tea in China.

Bloody teachers complaining again

:thedummy:thedummy:thedummy If its that much hassle:tears:aidan:aidan, leave get another job, I DID:thumb2

i think you'll find the person complaining wasn't a teacher, and anyway what job would give you 12 weeks holiday a year!!!!!!!!!!
