Made a short stop on the way to work today (about 2 mins) When i returned the bike would not start, it gave the 'AWS' warning on the control panel which i understand means the bike does not recognise the key and prevents the starter motor from operating.
Called the breakdown truck but got it started about 40mins later just before the recovery arrived. I foolishly thought the problem had gone away and switched the ignition off again whilst i cancelled the assistance, yes you guessed it i still had the problem. A pattern was starting to emerge which even i with no mechanical knowlege began to grasp. I went for a coffee came back 1/2 an hour later and it started, drove to Battersea BMW where the imobiliser was diagnosed as the problem and awaits replacement, hopefully by tomorrow. The only electronic event which i wondered may have been a factor was the battery software update i had about 2 weeks ago...only a theory. Anyone out there got any thoughts or had similar incident or is this a one off? :nenau

Unlikely to be the software I would have thought. I have a dim memory of someone else with this problem, I think it turned out to be a faulty immobiliser sensor (the plastic ring around the ignition barrel).

Yep I had that, I thought it said EWS when it happened though!

Definately ring antenna at fault on mine.

Shep :bounce1

Me too, last year on a trip around Scotland... it was a real pain, starting eventually, but sometimes having to wait almost 30 mins before it would fire up. :spitfire
It was taken away in the big white van when I got back home and had it's "black box" replaced because it wasn't recognising the key, so I was told... it's been OK since. :clap

yes, happened to me too.

Called recovery, eventually got bike started, cancelled call out. Electrics failed a few hours later, fixed themselves, broke again, (repeat ad nauseam)

bike still in Battersea, been there for a week or so, no news . . . .

sorry i meant EWS. 10 out of 10 for diagnosis, the fault was the ring antenna and i am pleased to report it has been fixed, Battersea very efficient. Thanks for your posts.
