Hello chaps, quick question really.

I'm just about to hit 90k miles on my 56 plate GS, there always appears to be a little backlash from the prop and what feels like play in the prop.

I need to get the bike ripped down to check it properly, but are the UJ's known to need replacement at this kind of mileage? or is it more likely to be a FD issue?

Regards

Andi

I ha e gone through 2 shafts in 97000 miles. Both as a result of UJ failures. The second one was replaced end free because it was less than 2 years old. There is at least one used one on EBay at the moment.

Also check the paralever bearings. Any slack in there will clunk as power goes on and off and feel like backlash.

Brilliant, does anyone know the UJ size?

So I can replace the ones on it. I'll also do a bearing refresh.

Cheers

Andi

Try a search on this forum. Someone took the sealed-for-life joints out and replaced them last year. IIRC it did not look like an easy task; the shaft has not been designed to be serviceable

It was me.....

I replaced the UJs in my shaft. Cost me about £70 for the pair. Not that hard really. Typically it sounds and reads harder than it really is.

It's now done a good 12k miles since and I just give it a blt of grease with the grease gun whenever I'm in there to do an oil change on the final drive.

It's all brutal hammering stuff really...:D

Search my posts to find details of the UJS reference numbers but they're stock items.

If anyone wants advice on it.... Give me a shout....

Roger.

Many years ago,I replaced the staked UJs on an MG Midget drive shaft. It's not hard to do though the type with circlips would have been easier. Some came with a grease nipple for easy lubrication (got to be the best option).

Here's @G5RJO driveshaft UJ thread. :)

Here's the Wikipedia entry on drive shaft couplings:

Interestingly they say that CV joints are now being used on prop shafts. Hey there's an idea.

Thanks Rog, will do, I work in engineering supply so I should be able to source them cheap enough

I have a drive shaft knocking about if you cannot get one locally, cheap but i would have to check postage
