Can anyone give me the definitive story on cracking racks / subframes? ('97 R1100GS)

Despite the warnings on this site, I've just fitted a big Givi top box and I'm now getting paranoid that if I put more than a spare pair of gloves and a map in there somethings going to break.

Instead of the plastic mounting plate that came with the (S/H) box I've machined a plate out of 12mm alloy, bolted through the grab handle mounts and the rear slots. This will reinforce the rack itself but do failures occur elsewhere?

On MicaPeak it says that racks were reinforced for '97 so can I fill the box with cans of beer or should I only use it to take the empties home?

Mark  :(

Rack

Same bike & year, had a Givi box on for 4 years and regularly load more than 5kg and so far not had any problems, just slow down for sleeping policemen........they may be faking it!

you might wanna be carefull "reinforcing" the alloy rack at that point [ the grab rail bolt] as the subframe for the bike finishes around 1 inch infront of that- infact all the graprail bolts do is hold the grabrail to the alloy rack and then inturn hold the tail light / mudgaurd/ number plate:(

if you wanna strengthen the rear rack wunderlich do a braket that actually fastens to the subfram at the rearward oem panier mounts

happy shopping

You might want to send a message to Rabbitson. He had a major crack in his 1100 subframe after riding around with a Givi. I think he is up in Norway at the moment but I know he replaced his a while back and was surpirsed because it didn't cost as much as you might fear. Drop him a PM and I'm sure he'll explain in more detail.

The Givi rack I got 2 years ago for my 1150 had strengthening paltes that pick up on the two pannier mounting bolts and goes to the rear of the box mounting plate. I can't see the 100 being any different.
