Back Up Hard Drive help!

I have a back up drive connected to my computer via USB port and it has been working well for over a year now.

Recently we have become aware of a continual beeping noise coming the drive when switching on the computer and as it always stops after a few minutes, I did nothing about it.

I now notice that the Back up Hard Drive icon is no longer displayed on 'My Computer' and when I try to back up, it says that the path does not exist.

I presumed that the hard Drive has packed up but if I unplug the USB connector behind the drive, and re connect it, everything works fine...until the next time that is!!

Bottom line is the the Hard Drive back up does work but only if I disconnect and reconnect it everytime I switch on the computer.

Any ideas what the problem is?

A stab in the dark -

Have you tried swapping the USB lead for a different one? One of the pins may have worn and requires a 'jiggle' to seat it properly. As I said, just a stab.

ultimately you should be thinking about having a back up of the back up as well....

Excellent idea, wish I had thought of that one!!!

Did the hard drive come with any installation discs? Do you need to re-install the drivers? They may have become corrupted over time and need re-installing.

No, the back up just came as it is! Thanks for help.

I meant to phone the place where I bought it today to see if they can help at all!!

Might even be less that a year old.............................
