bike is twin-spark 1150GS with 3.5k miles. all standard exhaust.

i do ride the bike fairly hard but is 30 to 33 mpg in london traffic typical? also i find there is quite a bit of back firing rumble in the overrun as engine slows from 4k down to 3k rpms. no scary "hit the deck bangs" but quite a bit of popping which is sometimes quite loud.

is there a problem or is it that "they all do that sir"?

what kind of fuel economy do others get?

Absolutely not they don't. Most people get pops from Y pieces if the seal is imperfect allowing air into the system. But your system is standard.

You should expect almost 10miles per litre if you're careful but it will reduce with traffic and serious wrist work.

I have a 1150GS 2000 reg and get about 30mpg in London. Standard exhaust etc.

I do a 50:50 split time wise betwen London traffic and motorways and I get around 35mpg but I don't get pops, bangs or anything from the exhaust.

whilst on the other hand my second ('02) GS while i still had it on the standard exhaust set-up used to return dire MPG in around London but excellent on m'ways, and used to backfire a little on over-run as well - albeit barely audibly...
