this is a bit of am odd one

i have a dell 515c with widows media
when i have the intermet running i have whats best decrided as two sets of vertical red/pink lines running on top off what ever is on the screen
next to the lines are small dots which seem to flask on and off.
The machine did this quite early on in its life then seemed to go away
Every things seems to work OK,no new software installed recently.
Done the usuall scans doenst show anything up

any suggestions

the best way i can describe these lines is that they are similar to thoes you see sometimes on a fax

help

Does it only happen when you're browsing????

Try a dark screensave to make sure.....if the lines are still there it's a monitor or graphics card prob...if it's ONLY when you're usinga browser, what browser are you using???

Uninstall it, make sure you have the latest version then re-install it.
(You may have probs doing this with Internet Explorer but it IS possible)

Try unplugging your Modem as well...it may have some EM radiation interfering with the display...seperate the cables maybe (pc to monitor and Modem/cable wires)

if i switch the desk top to a white background i can see the lines
so yes its there even if not browsing , but the lines get darker when scrolling down the page

ok so it's not an internet thing, it's a screen/driver/graphics card problem.

Check the obvious.....turn off, unplug the monitor from the PC then make sure the connections are clean, reseat it proper;y and turn on again.

Check you have the latest graphics drivers......

Ooo, one sec, just thought.....

Before you do anythng else, change the resolution of your screen........do the lines change accordingly in proportion/width etc or are they still the same?????

If they stay the same, it's the monitor or its lead itself...either interference or maybe the monitor's on the way out.

If the lines change with the resolution change, it's a graphics card/driver issue.......let us know :thumb

As suggested i have changed the screen resolution and the ghost lines change get wider apart with the screen resolution

both the PC and monitor are only a few moths old

will try the screen with my son's laptop see if it still the same

if i use the screen as a slave to my sons laptop, no lines so i guess that points to the card then ?

Why mess around it sounds like a warranty job to me.

I was trying to avoid the warranty route if at all poss, and like everthing else there is always someone who has had a similar problem who can hopefully help you out .

Did the screen come with any RF graphite collars that you clip round the signal cable? If so did you fit them?

Are there any power supplies or devices with a reasonable magnetic field (eg. speakers) near the screen?

Yep........or the lead from your pc to the monitor maybe.

Make sure it's as far away as poss from other cables (particularly ones that are looped up) .

If that fails, I'd try re-seating the graphics card (but only if you're confident doing that) or take it in as it's under warranty.)

(PS If you are happy going into the box, try another Graphics card in it if you have one lying about....most of us do after changing PC's /Upgrades etc..that would tell you for sure)

You did make sure you have the latest Grphx drivers didn't you????

Everything i have tried so far looks to be OK
I best not poke about inside just yet as its only a few months old
hence hopefully it has the right drivers.
I should maybe do a system restore back to its 'as new' condition to see if that does anything, otherwise i should try the 'Dell hepline' if thats not a contradiction of terms !

Update

Called Dell, went through a sequence of steps, which confirmed that in fact the video card as suggested in earlier posts was indeed the root cause.
Removed the card and plugged the monitor into the other outlet and marks gone, this works, or so I am told because the motherboard had an inbuilt limited video.
So Dell man offered to courier a new card out if I was prepared to change it myself, (takes less than 5 minutes) while not overjoyed it happened in the first place, I don’t think I can complain about the service (once you get your ear 'tuned' to the Indian accent.)
Thanks to all those who suggested possible causes
