Hi Guys

The Mrs has a Dell laptop (yeah I know!!! but she likes it). I want to take a back up of it, but it is one of those **$%**!! computers which didn't come with an XP disk, as it was all preinstalled, so to reinstall it you use a keyboard shortcut or go through a series of menu's.

I have tried searching and can't seem to find the backup program.

Any suggestions would be welcome (apart from the one about chucking it through a window and buying a new one, I've suggested that and she won't have it!!)

If it helps it is a Dell Inspiron 1300.

Oh, and anyone know where I can get a cheap memory upgrade it, as it's current 248 chip is kinda slooooooooowwwwwww.

Thanks guys

Neil

I think you're easiest option is to get yourself a new and legit XP disk. If you fancy a challenge get an licenced copy on disk and find some unlocking software. Someone on ukGSer is bound to have a copy if you ask around ;)

Regarding extra memory, these guys "Kingston" are good on price & availability :thumb2

You could use a demo copy of ACRONIS to backup the 'restore' partition on the Dell to a DVD (assuming it has a DVD burner that is, otherwise it'll have to be on about 5 or more CD's.

Check with CRUCIAL for exactly which type of memory the Dell needs and then have a look around for best price. Sometimes EBay is worth a look too :)

+1 for acronis, but back up the working C drive & keep it updated. put it on a new partition, dvd or external/network drive :thumb2

maybe even consider buying* a copy of acronis, it's less than half the price of an OEM xp disc.

*it's all over the interweb for nowt as well.

:bowA:bowC:bowR:bowO:bowN:bowI:bowS

buy yourself an external usb hard drive and use Acronis to backup to that.
