Balancer pipe or not to balancer pipe that's the question.

Hi Chaps,
As some are already aware spent Saturday in garage fitting new Remus down pipes to my 12GS. Went for beer last night with my mate and we were discussing why the standard 12GS has a balancer pipe but the after market Remus part hasn't. Which is best balancer pipe or not, what does the balancer pipe do and why has the after market part not got one. Do Remus and Bos know something BMW don't, or is it just novelty to make nob heads like me buy one. Your comments and explainations appreciated, cos we've no idea!!!

As far as I understand it (and that's not a huge amount :) ) the balance pipe allows the pressure wave from one cylinder to ease the flow of exhaust gasses from the other cylinder. The distance from the exhaust port to the pipe is calculated so that, at the desired rpm, the pressure wave from the exhaust stroke will reach the other cylinder's header pipe and create an area of low pressure, just at the time that the second cylinder is performing its exhaust stroke.

That's the theory ... the end result is that, at the desired rpm you get a boost in torque.

My guess is that BMW have to use intelligent exhaust design to achieve the desired performance while still complying with noise and emission regulations. Aftermarket manufacturers don't have to worry about this, so they take the "brute force" approach of just having a more freely flowing header and silencer.

an 'extraction' system . ( when applied to cam timing ( large overlap ) as well it sucks fuel thru )
