Hi Guys,

Having a bimble around the West Coast of Ireland for a week with SWMBO and I'm in need of a bit of local advice regarding hotels in / near Baltimore. Wife has booked tickets today to see Tommy Tiernan at Glebe Gardens amphitheatre, Wednesday 20th August... (Now I wouldn't have chanced anything outside but you never know, it might not rain that evening!)
So where would the GSers from the Peoples Republic of Cork recommend to stay for a couple of nights in West Cork?

People from Cork who live in Twickenham may also respond to this request :aidan

Many thanks in advance,

Dave McKelvey

Dave,
Avoid Westh Cork like the plague;-))
While you are there check out http://www.westcorkmusic.ie/mastersoftradition/
in Bantry from the 20th.
Don't worry too much about accomodation as there are loads of B&Bs and if one is full they will set you up with something else without any bother.
http://www.channelviewbb.com/ as a starter for 10.
All the best,
Pat.
p.s. Are you ever up in the Big Smoke??

Hi Pat,

Many thanks for the advice to avoid West Cork, but we've never been there and an Ulstermen living in Somerset is allowed to explore every now and again... Even that far south.

I'll get Katie on the case tonight... and follow up your recommendation.

Up in the smoke fairly often, must have a catch up... Or you can always come here for a weekend in the sticks ?

All the best,

Dave

Try Allihies on the Beara
Try Kilcrhoane on Sheeps head
Baltimore is unfortunately packed with people these days and not anywhere as nice as it used to be
Try Schull

Allihies there are numerous BandB's

Hi Richie,

My thoughts were to try Beara too, as we know that area a bit from touring there about 5 years ago...

New idea is to stay just 1 night B&B in Baltimore with parking / walking distance from the Tommy Tiernan gig, so we can have a good drink and not have to worry about cabs etc.. So booking locally is now swmbo's priority.

The big sea angling competition commencing 21st August doesn't help:blast

Just had a pm to try The Waterfront Hotel in Baltimore.

I'll keep you posted.

All the best,

Dave.

Richie,

Many thanks for the advice... We won't bother with Kilarney then... as you aren't the first to tell me that:beerjug:

Katie has now booked The Waterfront, Baltimore for the Tiernan night.. and has found B&B's for the rest of the trip :clap:clap

Just hope the weather is kind in August..

Cheers for now,

Dave.

at The Clone Hotel, below the Wicklow mountains..

Baltimore is a lovely little village, take a ferry to Sherkin or Cape clear Islands, if you have time spend a night on Cape, good music sessions and craic, visit the Mizen Head and go onto the lighthouse, I wouldnt avoid Killarney, drive the gap of Dunloe, Molls gap, Ladys view, stunning scenery, Its also a great town for entertainment if you want that, Beara peninsula is beautiful but so is the ring of Kerry. Best of luck with your trip.

Cheers Gerry,

This place never ceases to amaze me, the number of PM's and recommendations for our wee trip.

Like the look of Cape clear, now just running out of time to fit everything in.

Obviously we will have to come back for a fortnight at least.

Quick question Gerry, is Glebe Gardens walking distance from the Waterfront in Baltimore?

Cheers

Dave.

Dave,

Max 10 minute walk as you have a little hill up and then down.

Also check out the Sack of Baltimore in 1631 when Algerian pirates attacked Baltimore and took english settlers as slaves, So be careful walking in the dark.

Many thanks Gerry,

My Mrs is originally from Glasgow, so if any Algerian pirates are still around from 1631 and can take a Glasgow kiss..the best of luck

Cheers

Dave.
