Bank Holiday Monday ride

JB,

You the Man. Fantastic route. Lovely to meet up with a friendly bunch of Tossers. Thanks to all who made Julie and I feel most welcome. Micky has made Julies day by saying that she was a good safe rider. Big thanks to leader JB and sweeper upper Micky. Also everyone else. That drop off system is the best I have been involved with. They usually disintegrate as we get nearer home.
:D

Just faffing with a few photos. Incoming shortly.:thumby:

Well JB, you pitched that just about perfect :thumb2 Great day out an thoroughly enjoyed the company. Alleycam, we owe you a beer :beerjug:

Many thanks JB. A wonderful day out & great to see all the friends I've not seen for a while. 235 miles for the day, but I think the back wheel did a couple more than the front one which only seemed to touch every third bump...

Jim, that route out of Barden was a real peach & it was a pleasure to take our Illustrious Leader back through Wigglesworth, Slaidburn, Dunsop Bridge & through the Trough of Bowland. I think it gave some balance to the beauty of your side of the Pennines... I also found a few more places to get airborne ;)

Can't wait for next time :thumb2

Good to see you again, after not crossing paths for a year or two

Know what you mean about the rear wheel, mine was similar - these old bikes have still got a bit of life left in them :)

i like hobgoblin, but have never tried it with chain lube.

does it make it slip down better? :D

Indeed, but not at the same time :D
:beerjug:

Yes, the drop off worked fine but just a couple of pointers ....

The person 'dropped off' always waited util the bike in front of me had gone by before setting off in front of me. As soon as the person marking the junction sees me they can go when convenient, thus freeing up road space. On one occasion at a downhill T junction turning left Chris waited until I was the last bike before moving off, we could clearly see each other, maybe just two bikes between us BUT he let the arsehole in the silver car turn in front of him, he now had to get past him again :blast

I was going to drag that said arsehole out of his car but we turned off again before I had the opportunity

If the dropped off bike can do so safely, wave the other bikes out, show them the road is clear to do so .... only Malc (Bilco 650 X Challenge) did this.

People think you can't overtake within the group but of course you can, as long as its done safely. If you've been 'dropped off' you can work your way back up to the front to 'play' with the leader :D

If you want to stop and take a piccie then do so :thumb2 wave those behind you past, the tail end Charlie will wait with you, maybe even take a piccie with you. The junctions ahead will be marked ... No one gets lost or left behind :comfort

It works ...

Great day :thumby:

Nah then me old cocker - whilst I bow to both your experience and intelligence as a rider/instructor/examiner & all round motorcycling Guru, (!).

The above advice cannot pass uncommented upon, so here goes:hide, (well we've all got to ensure that JB gets to double figure pages for his excellent day out).

I would always be wary, not to say downright against, riding to another rider's "wave" as a guarantee that it was safe for me to proceed - even a rider like Malc, someone I've ridden with, trust, and think of as a good sound rider. The car equivalent is the trusted front seat passenger who lets you know, "Clear left!". It helps, and eases your negotiation of the junction, but I'm not going to cede control to them.

As for riding in such a large group; thirteen, and composed of significant numbers of riders that I've no experience of, I prefer to adopt a, "watch & learn", stance. So, unless I know that the riders behind me are comfortable with the turn marker clearing off as Tail-end Charlie appears in their mirrors, I'll wait until the penultimate rider passes me.

I'm happy to have people overtake me, (as did Elle at one point yesterday), but I would err on the side that whilst I might think a safe pass was on, the person being passed might not. If I want to "play" I can always hang back for a short while & then let slip the dogs & catch the riders in front up.

So, whilst I wasn't there and cannot comment with any authority whatsoever, Chris's decision could well have been the one I'd have chosen for the above reasons.

With a smaller group of riders all of whom know each other's styles, preferences, strengths & weaknesses, your proffered approach is the one I'd opt for, always retaining the absolute authority/responsibility for my decisions as a rider.

And, as for your violent intentions regarding the Knob in the silver Jag - might I offer you my services as an anger control therapist?! (and @ your age you ol' scroat you have to consider your blood pressure:hug)

All that said - yesterday's ride was the most well executed medium sized group ride that I've ever taken part in, and congratulations are due to one & all for making it so.

All the best, Jim.

The "Hair Bears were out in force yesterday - must be the sun!

Frightening enough with their helmets on - but naked:eek

All the best, Jim.

I was a bit apprehensive before, thinking what have I let myself in for:blast

But we all got into our stride very quickly and even though there were some riders with less experience than others (we had no less than 3 Advanced Riding Instructors, in the group:cool:) - it flowed like a stream without mishaps, anyone getting lost or left behind and everyone riding at their own pace for some 125 miles on mainly minor roads.

The roads we chose were virtually traffic free (not easy on a scorchio Bank Holiday in the Yorkshre Dales)

Thanks to everybody who came and made showing you around so much fun - I went on a few roads that were new to me too;)

Now then mi ol' mucker ....

I agree entirely with what you say ... only a fool would pull out of a junction on the strength of someone else's wave, but it does help make a quicker informed decision ... and any information is good information :P

If the marker biker can clearly see the tail end charlie, and the bikes in between, then I can see no reason for them to wait to drop in front of him if they have a clear move off available. This of course is only for short distance stuff, if the bikes are some considerable distance away then marker biker should stay in position .... the bike's in front of tail end charlie might not be looking that far ahead :nenau

Any doubt whatsoever of course then stay put :thumb2

:beerjug:

:beerjug:Well looks like you lot had a great day would have loved that ride maybe next time the pics are great ,put face to one name Jim we are meeting up at the TT :thumby:Wont try and understand the drop off system just hope its easier in practice than in theory lol!!!:beerjug:Hughie

A belated BIG thank you to everyone for making my 1st UKGSer ride out a great one :beerjug:
I didn't take a camera so nothing to share and thank you to everyone else who did. Some cracking roads, a few butt clenching ones too
Let's book the sunshine for the next one too :thumb

Well, I'll go to the foot of our stairs!!!

Are we agreeing about something Mick?!

I must have been wrong, surely there must be some mistake ........... unless you've been supping that chain lube again?

All the best, (& see you in the am :kissy2), Jim.

How DO you do that?

Excuse me on the move photos.

Little slideshow.

Some excellent photos Andrew, and thank you for the slide show.

Two questions, i/ - How do you manage to take those "on the move" shots? & ii/ - How do you create such a slide show, & then share it on the site?

Bear in mind when you reply Andrew, that I have only just mastered turning on my Zumo, (& then only after Magnet showed me how!).

All the best, Jim.
