Hello Guys,
I am a new bmw 1200GSer. Just got triple black 2days ago.

I have question on protection and insurance.

I live in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Everything here is very expensive. For example, GS1200 Premium package is 80,000 reais which is about 40,000 US dollar.
I know it is crazy.

Insurance here is about 1500 - 2500 US dollar a year.
As you can guess, all the parts are expensive too so it will be better to get an insurance. But if nice protection (SW-Motech) is 500 dollar and if it really protects the bike perfectly like this dealer is saying, why do I need to get an insurance that I can change all the damaged parts to new ones and get the protection that they said it protects the bike perfectly?

It makes no sense to me.. If 500 USD can protect my bike, why spending 1500-2500 more to get an insurance?

Just my personal opinion ..... I only insure for what I cannot afford, always the same and it applies to all types of insurance.

If the bike falls over, or sustains light damage if I come off, then I'll just pay to repair it, no claim on the insurance. Any claim will be recouped by the insurers over time because it goes on your claims history. If the damage is substantial and it is beyond what I can afford, then yes I will need to make a claim.

So why use crash bars? Simply because they will reduce any damage, and therefore the likelyhood of a necessary claim is reduced. Crash bars are not going to prevent all damage, but will reduce it, certainly in what can be an expensive part of the bike.

Crash bars can be the difference between picking the bike up and carrying on, or looking at a trashed rocker cover. My choice would be crash bars.
