Lookig getting a wax jacket, not sure whats best, always had barbour in past.

i want a good wearing jacket to last me as i have out worn all others and not mad on some newer sprty jacket. it wont get much bike time, maybe not and again when i just want feel retro.

anyone have deals, sales etc? told heavyweight on to go for and not medium or light weight.

Like you I've been a Barbour man. They do wear out quickly as they are a relatively thin cotton. I wear mine on the bike a lot too.

If you can get one of the heavyweight ex-Army green ones, they do wear a lot longer than the thinner, black ones seem to.

I don't know what this new fangled 'Duralinen' material is like. Maybe worth enquiring about that ?

I bought another International earlier this year to replace an old one and found that the newer silicone-based wax does not have any odor to it and feels as if it will last longer. I hope it will as I've just paid Barbour to add the 2 bellows pockets on the rear of the jacket like the old guys used to do back in the day.

I can't comment on Belstaff but they do do nylon versions which must last longer.

Edited to add: Oh, the new Barbour Pegasus looks sharp. In the original dull green but with a huge detachable hood (rather than the usual one that is too small to be of any serious use) and of heavyweight cotton. Around £230 like an International. Might be worth a look.

I'll be keeping an eye myself on this thread to see what others have to recommend.

I have a Belstaff XL500 'nylon' jacket (actually something called Belflex made by Dupont) which I 've had for a few months. I've been wearing it on the bike in warmer weather, going into town, and when a proper biking jacket isn't practical. I've been very pleased with it and a fashionista friend told me it was "on trend" whatever that means,

I tried the waxed cotton version, its much heavier, needs to be kept waxed to be waterproof, and more expensive.

They look good. Heavyweight 12oz cotton too. Have you got or seen one to make a comparison with Barbour ?

I don't think the modern Barbours need re-waxing that often. The wax doesn't seem to rub off as easily as the old stuff used to.

I have one, bought after being disappointed by the quality of modern Barbours.

Used for when I like to feel retro on an old Brit bike :D

Looked at mine today and it's a 42 chest if that's any use?

I like it but it's a little too retro for me and I'm scrimping for a 1150GS.

Difficult to say. Most of my kit is 44 to 46 but this fits me. I can measure it and take some pictures for you.

checked, 42 is a large, not sure will fit as think i am usually xl.

must try on old barbour again see what size it is

I found the brass zips a bit sticky to start with, odd threads not trimmed but at £60 odd delivered with the option of returning it, for a heavy waxed cotton jacket, it's a bargain....... IMHO

wouldnt mind that if it holds up over time

was doing check on the campbellcooper vincent jacket.

few on horizons unlimited have them, said were nto as good with single stitching, not as much storm proofing on pockets so let water in.

be carfull of the sizing, I bought one in 1979 and found it in the attic about 3 years ago, and damn thing must have shrunk about 6 size and it dont come anyway near fitting anymore !!! I must have cost be at least £30 back then

I still have, and use, my original Belstaff trailmaster jacket.:D The lining is a bit worn and there is one part of the left cuff with a few small holes that have worn through, but it has stood the test of time.:rob Someone told me they are over £400 new now and looking through a couple of the comics, they weren't wrong.

£400 for a wax jacket? I didn't reaalise I was so wealthy.:D

Something like 20,000 miles later I'm still loving my modern Trailmaster -I say modern as it's got armour in the shoulders and elbows.
