Start new job in the new year and im looking for a base layer to keep me warm through the winter as its outdoors , but i could also use the base layer for when i'm on the bike as well .......

Also any decent winter socks ..... would go outdoors be the best place :beerjug:

Aldi doing merino wool for around £25 at the mo, great deal :beerjug:

It's a case of "buyer beware " imho !
Good base layers - winter or summer ...absolutely vital , but it's hard to tell good from bad until you have worn them for a few months !
Things to avoid - (i) merino "blend" (could be just 10%merino!) (ii) base layers that shrink when washed ! (iii) those vendors who apply the term freely to crappy products (it's a bit like "adventure" ... over -used marketing hype)

Love mine from Aldi (strangely ) and REI

I have been using thermal long sleeve tshirts and long johns (not the merino blend ones which are not as good as these cheaper ones) from Lidl for a couple of years now - peerless and cheep as chips. Thin lightweight dont shrink dont make you smell all good! If you are quick you might catch the tail end of this years release (bought 5 pairs of each myself this time round)

Cotswold Outdoors 100% Merino wool Icebreaker base layer tops are £60 and worth every penny :thumb2

Smartwool or Vulpine or On One for merino (all good quality cycling brands). Or you could try BAM clothing - bamboo fibres instead of wool. Surprisingly effective!

I have just bought a few from TK MAxx

XTM 230 weight merino very very good

I use sports base layer long sleeved tops and long legs... look for "running" base layer items from any good sports shop. Works extremely well.

Agree you get what you pay for,

Merino Icebreaker stuff for me - use in summer and winter 200 base layer stuff is good for winter day to day and when very cold go into the 260 grade stuff.

I have bought during deals which seem to come and go via Cotswold or Blacks

Tip-top kit.

If you really want warm
Try Woolpower Ulfrotte base layers. Proper Norwegian stuff merino and polyester mix for durability with a cushion loop inner face. Comes in various thicknesses. Looks a bit naff, but hey, it's a base layer so what.

Buy at Tamarack outdoors.
