BaseCamp 4.3.1 release May 16th 2014

Think I'll be giving this a miss for a bit. Thanks though to everyone for the heads up and iand46's help via PM's.

Wise move.

I can't launch my BaseCamp after having updated to 4.3.1 Reinstalled thrice but it still doesn't work.

:(

I ran the udate from the Apple App Store. I now get the following error message every time I start up Basecamp:

"An error has occurred loading your data

Your list data file is corrupted. Basecamp is loading a back, but some data may be lost"

- not the sort of message you want to see!

I am currently in discussion with Garmin Support to find out what is wrong and a fix. But they are currently clueless and have asked for a copy of my XML file

Same problem here! :tears

Paul 08: yes if there are lots of corruptions it would be best to restore from time machine and start again. Whether or not you choose to try 4.31 must be your choice. I am having no problems with 4.31 and am using it very heavily at the moment .

I can certainly restore the previous version 4.2.4 of Basecamp from my Time Machine backups. What i have not fathomed out yet is where the "list data file" that is corrupted lives, so that can be restored too. Any ideas? Because, restoring the v4.2.4 does not seem to be the real problem, it's the fact that the list data file and its backup are now corrupted.

I'm on the lastest Mac OSX , which itself received a big system update at approx the same time . No problems to report.
Note 4.31 may not be available for Windoze, I have no info on that .

Fwiw, Basecamp stores it's data to a place unknown, but I ALWAYS export each routing file as a named gpx route to a data directory of my choice. That way you can file them away to somewhere like Dropbox, for archiving safely. Easy to export and just as easy to re import when needed.

Worth considering, but an element of "horse/stable door/bolted" now.

All my routes still seem to be there and visible (at first glance) but I need to identify the "list data file" that Basecamp thinks is corrupted so that I can restore it from my Time Machine Backup

Taken from Zumoforums thread on same issue...............

Mine would not open either. I have fixed the problem by renaming the basecamp program folder to a different name and then reinstalling from a fresh download of 4.3.1.

It turns out that the uninstall doesn't really uninstall everything, so that is why a reinstall doesn't work unless you delete or rename the old basecamp program folder. BaseCamp now works for me.

Hi Paul08,

Open 'Finder' and go to your 'Home' folder.
In the Finder menu, click on 'Go' then hold the 'Alt' key down and you will see appear in the drop down list a folder called 'Library'.
Click on this and in the 'Application Support' folder you will see the 'Garmin' folder
All the stuff you need to restore should be in 'Database'

Hope this helps, paul

Umm

not really au fait with this Mac and its structure nor with the workings of Basecamp.
BUT

i have been sent via email a set of routes for an upcoming trip. These routes (split into daily bites) are in the .gdb format.
I have got them into ' my computer' section of BC and have tried to export them to my device ... all the waypoints end up in the favourites folder on the device, but i can't for the life of me find the daily bite i.e for A>B
for Day1 and B>C for Day2 ??

Any pointers pls?

I'm afraid digga, that each Garmin device operates with increasing complexity (from my introductory days with a Quest). NavV, for instance separates routes (A-B). from favourites and asks you if you wish to import into its Trip Planner, now called an app, which is where this latest toy hides its routes; assuming that you say yes at the import time. What device are you using ?

This is the response that I have just had from Garmin Customer Support:

"Thank you for contacting Garmin Europe.

I do apologise for the ongoing issue and am happy to assist further.

Occasionally a file on the device itself (XML file) can cause issues with Garmin applications such as Basecamp. However, in this instance it is clear that the error is in fact with Basecamp itself.

Please could you completely uninstall Basecamp and then reinstall from the Garmin website.

To remove BaseCamp from the Mac:

Open Macintosh HD
Click the Applications folder
Click and drag Garmin BaseCamp.app to the Trash
Click the Go menu at the top of the Mac
Click Home
Click the Library folder1
Click the Preferences folder
Click and drag "com.garmin.BaseCamp.plist" to the Trash
Navigate back to the Library folder
Click the Application Support folder
Click the Garmin folder
Click and drag the BaseCamp folder to the Trash
Empty the Trash
Garmin BaseCamp should now be removed from the computer.

1Note: The Library folder is hidden in Mac OS 10.7 and newer. To access the Library folder:

Click the Go menu at the top of the Mac
Click Go to Folder
Enter Library
Click Go
Once this is complete, please reinstall from http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=4449

Not had chance to do it yet. But will report back with results when I do

"My name's Blackal, and I'm a Basecampoholic!" :rob

There - I've said it!

A bit of perseverence - and a few screw-ups along the way - and it is good to use.

The program itself seems to be a bit memory-hungry, and the routes when exported and e-mailed - seem to be a fair size too.

Otherwise - I'm a happy (Base) Camper ! :beerjug:

Not had chance to do it yet. But will report back with results when I do

Be warned - what Garmin suggested does NOT work!!! I had to revert to using my Apple Time Machine backups to restore Basecamp v4.2.4 from earlier this month. Thank God I had those backups!!

This is what I have just emailed to Garmin:

"Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately, it did not work!!!

I followed your instructions (deleting the Basecamp app, the the Basecamp folder and the .plist file) and downloaded Basecamp 4.3.1 from the Garmin website.

I opened Basecamp and it was blank! None of my routes were visible, even after I had logged into my myGarmn account. Nothing!!!!

Also, when I closed and then re-opened Basecamp I got the same error message as before : “An error occurred loading your data. Your list data file is corrupted”

Is there an “issue” with v4.3.1?

So, I decided to try to restore my Basecamp v4.2.4 which was working perfectly before I tried to update to v4.3.1.
I deleted the app, folder and file again (as per your email) and went to my Apple Time Machine backup and “restored” the following:
* the Basecamp v4.2.4 app
* the com.garmin.BaseCamp.plist file
* the Basecamp folder (in the Application Support /Garmin folder)

This restored my Basecamp and my routes! And Basecamp (albeit v4.2.4) is running on my laptop.

I will hold off trying to load the v4.3.1 update until you have time to respond to this email.

BTW, there is an easier way to get to the Library folder than the one you give in your email: all you have to do is hold down the Alt key after you have clicked on “Go” and the Library folder is revealed."

I will report back if/when I get a response from Garmin

Watch this space!

Still reporting no problems with my 4.3.1 and I've used it to exhaustion . Keep your data files seperate from system files, that's a recommendation for ANY computer activity

Garmin Nuvi 550 is the device

Basecamp is the app - V 4.3.1
