Basecamp - getting started. Help required

Just noticed that there is a MapUpdater for Mac, have a look here. Might be useful for the future...
So, at the risk of asking a really stupid question (yes, I know I already have asked some stupid questions!!!!!), is there a difference between:
Garmin Lifetime Map Updater (which I already have on my computer)
and
Garmin Map Updater (which you give the link for)?

Are they one and the same thing, as I am loathe to download yet another piece of Garmin Software that may duplicate what I already have?

And, what is the difference betweem Garmin (Lifetime) Map Updater and the Garmin Express that software that I also have on my computer.

At the moment, if i connect either my BMW Nav IV or my Nuvi 9from my car), Garmin Express is automatically opened. And it is Garmin Express (not Lifetime Map Updater) that has flagged up both map and firmware updates, not the Map Updater.

I really am confused about seeminglu random pieces of software that Garmin put out there which seemingly do the same thing. But I am prepared to accept that I may be wrong and that there may be essential differences/nuances!!!!!!

Intuitive?

Hi,
Lost in all this but need related help.
I am an apple fan, and find all their stuff quite intuitive to use. IBM, less so, Garmin - they just make me want to go to a dark room.

Life Time Updates.
First. I got the Nav4 with lifetime up-dates, but when i try to up-date Garmin want me to pay. I don't want to.

Maps on Nav4 but not mac.
Next, I got fed up with the 2012 City Nav map and deleted it! Basecamp kept going to it instead of the 2013 version which I somehow found! Now I have no maps on Base Camp, but all on the Nav 4.My finder shows them in the external device.
North America 2013.30
Europe NT 2013.30
These are maybe on the SD card.
Can I copy those to my mac, so that I can route plan without the Nav 4 plugged in?

Basecamp only IBM?
Tried to up date that but it said system needed IBM. Would not run .exe on my mac

Maps relief.
If I connect Nav4 to mac, I can see the maps, BUT, it has no topography; just looks like global map, yet map info says Europe. How do you get relief showing.

Look, I am really sorry to ask these basic questions, and I know it is me being lazy, but I have googled it, e-mailed Garmin, and have decided to look really dumb, and admit defeat.
Any ideas?

Small victory.

Somehow downloaded the Basecamp version 4.1.2

Just to confirm that when using maps from my NAv 4, they are not the global maps, they are City nav or North America, but no topi.

Download maps; I seem to be getting directed yo the Nav 4.

Have you registered with Garmin, signing up for a myGarmin account. This should activate your lifetime mapping updates and make it possible to download mapping to your Mac.

Garmin have produced various programs for downloading the mapping. Some of these are dreadful, some not so dreadful... There have been issues with both Lifetime Updater and the new Garmin Express, some have had success, others not.

I would recommend the MapUpdater, which is the old faithful of the updaters. See the link I provided above, there's a Mac version. you will need to connect your GPS to your Mac to validate the mapping data download and carefully scrutinise the screens for install options that will let you install to your computer and your GPS at the same time. The mapping versions are now at 2013.40 for the States and 2013.41 in Europe due to an error with 2013.40. The install process will take some time depending on your internet connection, it's a few GB, I tend to leave my overnight. Even if you have a fast connection it can take some time as Garmin throttle the bandwidth at their end I believe.

You can use Basecamp with the mapping on your Zumo but it's far better to have the mapping data on your computer. Not sure if you can with it on the SD card on a Mac though. Best to get the mapping installed.

- that explains a lot. It takes ages and, if like me you are on a laptop with energy saving settings, then it can be a real pain.

Funny you should say that.

Hi Guys,
thanks for not shooting me down.
I shall check that I am actually registered; I remember I had lots of contradicting messages on the screen - sometimes it seemed to recognise my Nav 4, but then say that I had no registered devices. I will check that out.

Also, good news on the maps.
I will try the map updater (been using the Express); would be cool if I could load maps to both the Nav 4 and computer.

Had a look at the lack of topo as well; I think my screen is showing all it is supposed to.
It would have been nice to be able to overlay some topo to show what the ride would be like, and in cold times to have a guess at temps dropping.

Yes, best to disable those sleep settings as they can play havoc with the install/download.
