got away from me this pm....

went to try a couple of gentlemans wee fires this pm, first fire, after approx 2 mins realised I was in deep shite, me and the other auld bloke helping couldn't keep on top of of it, few panic stricken phone calls, younger blood arriving after an hour, another 2 hours and we'd killed it...

Moral??

Always have young fit guys; always have mister(water); finish earlier in season!

Managed to keep it out of Doyles forestry....God ...the embarrassment!!

Another Fire!!

Here Gerry, it's maybe a coincidence:rolleyes: but fires seem to be getting out of control everywhere you go - GC seemed to think you were connected with with a "small" fire in his neck of the woods recently:eek:

Ahem:augie. you do realise the burning season is finished and it is illegal to burn now:rob.

hounds mon,tues. you coming across.

Aha, will be tomorrow, OK today....

'In Scotland, muirburn is permitted only between 1st October and 15th April inclusive, at all altitudes. This may be extended to 30th April only on the authority of the landowner. Generally, the Scottish Government does not encourage burning after the 15th of April. A muirburn licence may be granted to allow burning outside the muirburn season for the following purposes only: conserving, restoring, enhancing or managing the natural environment; research; or public safety. Details of how to apply for a licence to burn outside the muirburn season are available from Scottish Natural Heritage ( http://www.snh.gov.uk/protecting-scotlands-nature/species-licensing/muirburn-licensing/).'

Where are hounds meeting??

looks like you all did well to stop it Gerry . you could have been the breaking story on the new Scottish fire and rescue website . lol . :D:D :beerjug::beerjug:

Wisnae me!! Honest... big man!

I'm trying to educate yous'e boys!

We get paid cash money from the gubmint for burning heather ....supposed to be good for blackgame....just out of the pix is a lek where 10 years ago 24 black-cock would gather in May-time to display....last year I saw 2..this year only 1. Nothing to do with the hen-harrier nest nearby of course.

Burnings good for red-grouse as well....and sheep...

Not much chance of taking a thrombie working a camera ... :augie:augie:augie

bet the guys were thinking " Is David Baillie goona grab a fucking beater and give us a hand here or take pictures all morning " lol :D:D

Gerry .... tell me the eyebrows have survived unscathed.
I'm off to bed and will worry all night.

It would have gotten very intense very quick if it had reached those young trees in the background . DAHIK :blast:blast fire crowning at head level and moving very fast in your direction tends to make the tweeter valve work in overtime . :D:D:D:D :beerjug::beerjug:

Ha! Call yourself a professional! Look at pix. See smoke? Away from planting in background? Wind from R - L ? Trees in photy=safe. Trees to left ...over hill.. down wind... not in photy...belong FC..not so safe....gulp!

Just trying to add some Intensity to your situation Gerry , the but what if factor . :D:D . I assume you used the classic pincer movement on your confligration ?? :D:D

Eh?? Just smacked fuck out the hill til it went out!

Actually what was surprising, after the weather we've had, was the rate of spread over dead grass rather than the heather. That and the swing in the wind. That's really what caught me out. I'm a very inexperienced hill burner, but learnt a lot today!!

theres a name for the dry grass Gerry which escapes me now because im rather drunk :thumb . It's been a particularly bad wildfire season for us because of this even though it aint been particularly dry . Pincer movement = work from both sides of fire front and beat it towards the middle . :thumb if you have enough help you can split the fire front up and work towards each other . taking account , as you have said , of the wind , but also the surrounding terrain . which most people forget . E.g. the fire front is 100 yds from and heading towards a drystane dyke . why rush in there and knock your pan in when the dyke will stop it naturally . wait for the fucker and catch it at the natural firebreaks . :D:D I know I'm prolly teaching you to suck eggs , but every little helps as they say . :D:D
BTW . if the fire front is strong enough it will run against the wind , particularly in deep heather , whinny bushes etc and at an unbelievable rate . :thumb2:thumb2

White grass??

Aye your'e right....if you've got enough bodies.. usually you can keep on top of a backfire because the wind keeps it back...if you look at photy 1, we were ( both of us at that stage?) on the down wind side..the fire in the distance we can ignore because its being kept back by the wind. We got the nearest side out and then went across to deal with the other side. Its very important when there's only 2 of you to know where you all are...just in case of mishaps!! My big mistake today was pushing on when there weren't enough of us, and not recognizing how dry the ground would become after 8 hrs....it was pissing down last night!!
