Went out to fire up the bike and it wouldn't. Battery is reading 12.13 which in my understanding is too low?

Real question is, as someone new to BMW's, do I need to remove battery from the bike to charge?. (I accept battery may need replaced but that's not the issue at present)

Charging it is the same as any other bike. If using an optimate or similar, then leave it on the bike. If using a car charger, I would personally remove it. A car charger could be a bit too fierce for it.

My old man always warned me about charging batteries in/on vehicles and the battery exploding. I've never ever heard of a battery exploding.

Have a friend with only one eye because of an exploding battery.
Removing it won't stop it from exploding though but switching the charger off before disconnecting the clips will. Main reason to remove the battery is the remote possibility of damaging the electronics.
Any half decent car charger will be fine. I have a Halfords smart charger thing and it does a good job, just don't try and charge a bike battery on max charge.
