battery charger connection

Having just bought a plug in connector for the socket on my gs, does anyone know which way round i should connect the wires from my optimate? i know theres only 2, but i am a numpty....

One on the left and one on the right. .....it doesn't matter

Yes mate the red wire (positive/live) goes to the middle connection
and the black one (earth) goes on the connection that is further back
if you know what i mean.

Yes it does.
On the BM socket, centre is positive.

Centre should always be positive on that type of plug/socket,regardless of manufacture.

Likewise,if you have a two-core cable,and both are black - but one has a white trace line on it,the black with white trace is the positive lead.

The Optimate has a "wrong polarity" light that will tell you if you've done it wrong

Will an Optimate work?

Will an optimate work? My dealer tells me that the computer switches off the BUS network (or whatever it is), so you can't actually charge through the accessory plug.

Is this actually the case - do I need to go out any buy a different charger that wakes up the GS (like the BMW charger) or will the Optimate work -which ever way it is wired?

Not that I have try it right now (I err.. don't actually take delivery of the bike until the 1st) but it's good to see that an optimate should work as long as the bike 'knows' it's being charged before you turn the ignition off. I guess the other way around it is to connect an optimate plug directly to the battery termianls (as on my 999).
