I have an optimate charger and when I picked my bike up from the dealer he told me something about being able to charge through the power socket.

Now I was more bothered about getting on the bike and not falling off so I've completely forgotten. Anyone charge the battery this way, and if so how?

Optimate

Yes I do, get a plug and wire it + to centre - to outside, you will need to solder the contacts, I used the croc clip cable & cut the croc clips off, its connected directly accross the battery, then just plug it in the aux power socket.

The plugs and sockets are available from Farnell's in Leeds, mail order www.farnell.co.uk I think and cost £1.40 plug, £3.10 socket, I fitted an extra socket to the beak like the Adventurer so its easier to connect, when on the Farnell site search for DC POWER to find the bits.
Hein Gericke also do a pre made cable with a connector on it that will go in the BMW socket or a standard cig lighter socket for £5.95, for Optimate 1+2 part # 29001205, for Optimate 3 part # 29001206.

Timbo.

Me too, only I use an Accumate charger.

For the first few months that I had the bike I got the dreaded flashing ABS lights quite often, especially in the morning. Since using the Accumate I don't think the ABS has ever refused to arm. If the bikes in the garage then it's on the charger. The batteries 4.5 yrs old and performs like new.

You could also try Motobins for the plug.

Yep - I use a trickle charger - optimate or accumate (can't remember which) , wired to a BMW plug. Only use in winter and plug into accessory socket and forget. Start the bike in Spring and away you go.

After leaving the parking light on and needing to recharge the battery I connected the flying lead that came with my Optimate directly to the battery.

The charger plugs directly into this lead.

Dont take any notice of me.Its just sour grapes coz Im just back from work and Im cold and wet.Looks like winter has arrived.

Yeah. I use an Optimate III throught the power socket. The Mrs bought a bike and optimate brought the battery back to life. She hardly ever gets on the bike just the occasional weekend so I leave it charging quite often.

As for the GS I once left my lights on (including the spots) and had a chat about the rear indicator mods. Standing at the rear of the bike I somehow forgot the spots would kill the battery. A bit silly.

Anyhow next day battery DEAD. Stuck Optimate into the power socket and 2 hours later battery as good as new.

Hey Malky,

Have you thought about fitting a stereo to your steed? Cos I think you could pick up a few quid while you're 'resting' running a mobile disco!! Alternatively with the season almost upon us how about putting on a Santa suit and running a mobile grotto?

If you're looking for some bookings I'd be happy to act as your agent! ;)

I've been using the Keller charger from Motobins. Just plug in and forget. It was half the price of the Optimate, too - £22.32. Motobins Part # 99841

This kind info was given to me by 'shuck raider.'
I took him up on the advise and have to agree with him on ease of use - just use the supplied plug, bung it in and forget...easy!

Socket 2 me

SThe bits aren't easy to find in the catalogue, Farnell's Order Numbers appear to be:

658431 for the socket
658376 for the plug

If they deliver the wrong bits I'll let you know?
