Battery Charging!

BMW sell a 13amp wall socket so your BMW will only receive 240 amps of bmw's very own special 1200LC specific canbus electricity.
Perfect for people just like you. as you can't be using just any old inferior electricity that comes out of the socket.

Excellent.

Where does one acquire such a device... :comfort :P

I've got one on the shelf ready to post. Only £98 posted.
Just imagine, pure BMW electricity, think how much better your BMW bike will run..

Remember to get your bmw distilled water and coolant while you are there. Tap water and halfords antifreeze will never do. The new WC twat suit pockets will be sized accordingly I am sure.

Dealer fitted my Optimate lead directly to the battery when I bought the bike. Been using that set up for 18 months with no problems at all.

I have some Ctek leads attached direct to the battery of my 2009 GSA, hidden under the seat. Means I can easily/quickly connect my Ctek charger.

You know the kind of shite you get the next morning after 8 pints of Guiness and a Lamb Balti.
Well that's how much shite the above statement is.

For some reason I read that as "Lambrini".....

Possibly very true but when you've just spunked north of 13k to buy the bike why not invest in £90 for BMs canbus friendly charger or an Optimate 4 for £50-60 that you can just plug in to the aux socket to keep everything cushty during the winter... :nenau

Because we all know it often fails to charge that way.

Don't forget to only use the wall socket on the far right.... :augie:augie

If people ride the friggin bike there would be no problem with batteries. And you would be getting genuine bmw leccy. Jjh

i have the optimate 4 for my TC, and i presume you only need to change over to program 2 (can-bus) if you're using the 12volt outlet, or am i wrong? should i change it over even though i'm connecting directly to the battery ?

Bought my bike off Chester in Dec - 2015 model.

Only 50 miles to date.

Not used her since Christmas and had it on the BMW charger for the last few weeks.

Went to it this morning for a ride out and dead as a dodo. Keyless so nowhere to try a key either, so it has been recovered with a suspected duff battery.

I might ask them to fit a lead direct to the battery whilst it's there as I'm not sure about the socket near the speedo.

Bugger - but at least they can fit the pannier locks now they've arrived.

Well that's interesting.
I collected mine from Chester on 19th December and in general have been very pleased with the bike.
I had the first service done this month. Being a good BMW customer, I bought the official BMW charger at the same time as the bike.
After the service I was asked what charger I had been using. I explained that I had only used the official charger and asked why they wanted to know. The reply was that the diagnostics had shown that the battery had been overcharged!!!
They suggested that I bring it in at some point and have it checked and that it would take about an hour to do so. It's a 130 mile round trip for me, so haven't been back to do so yet.
Anyway......yesterday I went out with a plan to ride all day round Wales. The bike started fine and I rode for 35 minutes to McDonalds in Newtown. I had a coffee and something to eat but when I went to ride off, the bike wouldn't start!
The battery was flat.
I called BMW a assistance. It took two and a half hours to get a man out from Barmouth!!!! We jump started the bike in seconds and I rode home without incident but my day was obviously ruined and my confidence in the bike is now dented.
I bought the bike specifically to do lots of long distance touring and I am concerned if this is likely to happen when I'm abroad, with hotels to get to and many miles to do.
I had not used the charger since the issue at the service. I have now obviously had to use it, for fear of another flat battery.
I am more concerned that even after. 35 minute ride to Newtown, the bike appears not to have charged the battery.
The question now is, what's the cause of the problem? The battery or the bike?
I will be speaking the BMW when they open tomorrow but please let me know how you get on with your problem.
As an aside and to add insult to injury, the chap called Paul at BMW assistance rang me constantly while I was waiting for the rescue chap, he bombarded me with annoying and pointless questions, the last call, the sixth I think, was to check that my GS was a petrol one!!!!!! WTF!!!!!!!!

Coincidence?

Will see what they say on tuesday as they're closed today - and post any update.

Got mine on 16 December and done fuck all with it since then and a 50 mile trip.

Got it and dealt with Mario yesterday.

Maybe it is over-charging but shouldn't the charger shut off when charged and monitor the battery?

Think about it. Really think about it.

If you are connected DIRECTLY to the battery, then you are nowhere near the canbus.

Hi Davel,
Iv'e done 1400 miles on mine and all has been well barring this incident.
The charger does shut off when it's finished, or at least mine does.
It was saying the battery was fully charged last night. I'm going to plug it in again this morning and see if it has lost any charge overnight.
My other concern is that bike batteries do not tolerate being fully discharged very well. It can damage them severely, so we probably need replacement batteries, regardless.
Looking on the forums, there does seem to be a bit of an issue with this matter but i have yet to read about a definitive answer.
Generally, the culprit appears to perhaps be the batteries but who knows!
I have had many bikes and ridden about 150,00 miles. I have never been caught out like i was yesterday.
So lucky I was at a McDonalds and not freezing my butt off for two and a half hours by the side of the road in Wales!
I really don't want to have to be carrying jump leads and power packs when I go out riding!
Looks like Chester are going to be getting at least two calls tomorrow!
Mine is the keyless version as well
Do you have the shift assist on yours too?

Yep shift assist which is great.

We'll see what they say
