Battery Charging!

Charger fine, battery suspected fault and replaced.

Software glitch on bike which has been updated and all is now fine.

Hope that sorts it for you Davel.
Did they tell you anything about the software glitch????
I'm booked in for next Wednesday. We have six inches of snow where I live, so just hoping I can get out on the day!!

I didn't ask - I'm allergic to technology...

Hope to collect at the weekend cos it's friggin freezing right now...

Bike was dropped off at home last week and all seems fine.

Pretty happy with the service from the recovery guys and Chester Motorrad to be fair.

Shit happens at times sadly and the timing could have been a lot worse...

And dead again.

5 days since last ride, not left on charger this time - and now back on the recovery truck to Chester.

Buggeration! Sorry to hear that Davel.
Mine went Back to Chester on the recovery truck. New battery fitted and they kept it for 24 hours on test to ensure that there wasn't a parasitic drain on the system.
I've ridden her a few times since then and all seems to be ok so far. Although they tested my charger and advised me to use it, I've been wary of doing so!
Your latest trouble does give me cause for concern though.
Please keep us informed
D

Do you have anything plugged into the accessory socket when the bike is switched off?

No nothing at all plugged into the socket at any time.

The Nav has its own supply and, even if I don't turn it off myself (which I always do) it turns itself off after a few seconds.

Always turn the bike off too when parked up - and double check because it's keyless.

Must admit that I've been wary of using the charger too after the last episode even though they say that it's okay. In any event it shouldn't have lost the charge.

Should have kept the Fatboy...

OK asking because I had a peculiar issue with flat batteries on my twin-cam and it took a while to get to the bottom of it -
turned out to be my old sat-nav being powered by the underseat socket. Even though the socket shuts down and doesn't output power, if it detects a voltage being present it assumes a charger has been connected and keeps the bikes electrics 'alive', this was draining my battery over about 3-4 days. My sat nav power supply was creating this voltage and fooling the bike! Once I disconnected it the problem went away.

Yes I remember that as well, there were quite a few incidents of this. Might not be the problem but worth investigating.

Just ride the bike and stop being nesh if it is a bit chilly, oh I forgot that your grips get so hot that they are ok unlike some of us who have to suffer cold hands because the grips are shit in the cold weather and we use the bike all year around. If you use the bike you will not need to charge the battery !!!!

Ha ha.

Have been riding when possible. Haven't used the heated grips because I've got some of those lobster type gloves that are really good in cold weather.

Will ask about the sat nav issue though.

I commute as much as I can on her, but sometimes have to take the car to carry stuff and sometimes the kids.

Software glitch and suspected duff battery - again.

This time checked over by the Head Tech guy and confirmed as sorted.

Hmmmmmm! Hope you are permanently sorted now Davel. There seem to be a lot of duff batteries knocking around.
Keeping my fingers crossed that mine stays ok. I'm off to Ireland soon, for nine days.
I thought they'd found and fixed the software glitch last time!???

So you guys that are using Optimate's to charge the battery are connecting to the positive on the battery or the jumping terminal?

I was told not to connect to the battery but to use the socket near to the dash.

Simple plug in jack supplied with the charger from the dealer.

I don't undirstand why people feel the need to use a charger at all. My bike sat outside under a cover for three months over winter and started first press of the button. Particularly since the lc has a decompression mechanism to make the load less at start.

Because I was advised to - if the bike was parked up for a few days or more.

Anyway, haven't charged it since and all seems well now.

Chester have also advised be to use the charger but like you, i have not bothered.
No further problems on mine thank goodness. I'm really enjoying the bike. She seems to get better every time i ride her!
Interesting to note that people on the ADV rider forum were having similar issues with the batteries and someone recently posted up pictures of an original battery with a substantial foam spacer under it to make it fill the battery compartment in the bike.
The later batteries fill the compartment completely and so does my new replacement battery.
