Battery charging?

I fitted an additional socket on my XR because the standard socket only provides five amps. Often this is enough but not for both my heated jacket & trousers or compressor. Charging via this extra socket which is connected directly to the battery means I don't have to buy a Can Bus friendly charger.

I dont get it ?
You havnt got to do anything. Just lift the cover and push it in.........

For me also. But I read somewhere (and it's so in my case) that having plugged in and then switched on the mains, you have to briefly switch the ignition on/off to start the process. Original battery on an early 2013 model.

To enable the charger to "talk" to the bike. It has to be plugged in within ten minutes of switching off. Or like you say, turn it on and off.
But surly that's easier than attaching leads to the battery and having to remove the seats each time?
The original post asked what's best. Using the din socket on the dash or attaching direct to the battery. It's clear to me. Just plug it in. Any other suggestion is beyond me.

I had a CTek before I got the GS, it came with 2 leads, one with crocodile connecters and one with round lugs

I don't have a din cable so I just got the round lug cable fitted by the dealer at PDI, there is a special connection point provided for the negative I think under the right hand cover, the CTek plug connector is waterproof and just pokes out from behind the right hand cover

I didn't have to buy anything extra, I don't have to lift the seat, I just plug it in and the battery is maintained, and taking things to the extreme the bikes electronics (canbus) are not active so I pay less electricity and I could leave it there for 10 years if I wanted to

Maybe the lead to the battery is not such a dumb option after all :nenau

Oh and I use the croc leads to maintain my lawn tractor battery :D

Mine is plugged in all the time. I use the BMW charger that constantly maintains and conditions the battery. Never had any issues and I like the simplicity.
No extra leads.

I use a fly lead so I can power a compressor from it to pump up a tyre after a puncture. Works well

How often do you get punctures ? Eeeekkkkkk.
Every year I cover 20k all over Europe with a good dose of off road. Maybe I shouldn't say this......
I've never had a puncture.

Anybody know why the optimate would show reversed polarity?

That is the only reason I installed the fly lead. No idea why the optimate won`t play-- it has been okay on haif a,dozen other bikes when plugged into the din socket. Impossible for the din socket to be connected wrongly on the bike side of things because the plugs only go in one way.

Test the polarity from the socket? The outside should be negative

Is this for your brand new bike? If so, don't bother, unless it'll sit for 6 months.

I'm ashamed to say I haven't ridden mine since the end of October (holidays, socialising, hospital visits :blagblah), so it's been sat in a cold garage for nearly 3 months. It started first time last week when the dealer picked it up to get new tyres fitted.

Save your money for petrol and beer.:thumb

Sadly, yes. There will periods of 4-5 months where the bike will be left alone with no attention.

I've gone for a ctek charger. Seem to get good write ups.
