Battery Charging

Sorry to ask a dumb question ,but I'm a new R1200 GS (2017) owner and want to know if its ok to connect an Optimate 3 directly to the Battery Terminals ,as the handbook recommends that the battery is disconnected before attaching a charger direct ?

However my last bike (KTM 1190 with Can bus) was connected direct to the battery for 3 years and didn't suffer any problems.

No probs, the bike will be fine.

Has your dealer fitted a pigtail? It will be a pain to each time take off the battery cover to attach to the battery. No issues in charging direct.

you should treat yourself to the Optimate 4 ,thesis a can bus charger and comes with the push in plug that you just push into the accessory socket . No faffing with wires or anything .

The Optimate works fine if you have an adaptor fitted as stated by kurienp, however on such a nice new and expensive bit of kit like a new 2017 GS why not splash out the extra few quid and go for the BMW charger? Just plug it into the socket by the handlebars and bingo! No wires, extra fitting atc. just plug and play.
