I'm sure this is all right, but before I plug it in can someone please confirm that it will be OK to plug an optimate into an AUX socket that is wired directly to a centaur fusebox on a 10amp fuse?

Cheers

Are we to assume that the fusebox is wired direct to the battery?

Never the less, personally I would still prefer to wire the Optimate lead directly to the battery, and via nothing.

Yep, fusebox is wired direct to battery, the reason I asked the question is it just doesn't seem right running power back through aux fuse box, I don't know why just a gut feeling. The bike is ridden most days, I only put it on charge if left for more than a week so lifting the seat and attatching directly to the bty is no hardship.

Thanks

Does optimate not come with a permanent fitting these days, where you attach a plug to the battery and then run that wire to an access point some where on the bike and then connect up at any time

Do i detect a hint of sarcasm?

Perhaps I should explain myself better. Optimate bty lead lost years ago as all my bikes have been charged through a BMW type aux socket. I also run a 1200 LT which I use for long trips and use the GS for commuting into London.

To make life simple for myself it would be nice to just unplug one bike and plug it straight into the other one.

You are agonising over whether it would be OK to run an Optimate through a Centaur fuse box and additional aux socket, which I guess you have gone to a lot of trouble to wire in?

Of course it will work. You can use an Optimate to charge a car battery via the vehicle's cigarette lighter (a fused circuit) - so why not via your fused Centaur fuse box?

Somewhere in the past there was a thread suggesting that when charging using an optimate direct to the battery then the battery should be disconnected from the bike. At the time I checked with my local dealer who confirmed this advice was correct. Not needed it since, but does anyone know if the advice still holds.

It's twaddle. No need to disconect.

I think the argument is that the "desulphation" mode that Optimates and the like claim to do could be damaging to bike/vehicle electrics.

I've never disconnected the battery before bunging a charger on any bike, but then it's always been in "top-up" mode only. Never had any problems.
