Hi guys

How is it about the CANBUS system on the 2010 GSA?
I need to mount a couple of things, Touratech instrument cover with 12V outlet, and a horn, can I mount it directly to the battery (of cause with a relay to the horn). Or can it cause problems with the CANBUS system??

I have seen the outlets that you can buy, controlled by the ignition, but are they nessary?

Thanks:)

I'm not the best person to give advice on anything mechanical/electrical, so there's loads more qualified on here to help...

...but I 'think' that so long as you connect direct from the battery with a fused supply then you are by-passing the Canbus system, which is basically an electronic fuse box, so it shouldn't be a problem.

The outlets you're on about is the things that Nippy Normans etc sell, which are like a secondary fuse box which allow you to run more than one accessory/feed from the battery. I don't think they are necessary, just make the fitting of more outlets from the battery easier and neater.

That's it as I know it anyway...but a fellow Tosser may be able to help you better, or be more specific.....but I had a try. :thumb2

Do you want the additional sockets to be permanently live (always on)? If so, you can go straight to the battery. Do not forget to fit a suitable fuse, 2 or 3 amp will be fine for the items you wish to run, five maps maximum.

If you wish to use switched power (something that is only live when you turn on the ignition switch)you will need to tap into a suitable switched supply. The power feed to the under seat auxiliary power socket is excellent.

Have a look at 'Switched power the easy way' for ideas and all about relays.

and how to make a feed for a GPS unit or anything else that will draw less than 5 amps, using the socket hidden away at the front of your bike.

Many electrical problems with flat batteries are caused when people connect more and more items directly to the battery, meaning they are always on. Why do they do it? As it is easiest; that is why. Is it really difficult to do it another way? No.

There you go!.....a morning bump from a numpty gets you what you needed! :thumb2

Good links! Thanks. :clap
I still have one Q, though!?

I was planning to make it "live/always on", but my concern was that running ground (-) from a frame connection or other.
Will that disturb the CANBUS system?

I have a life of experience, of installing gadgets in cars, and other 12 and 24V wheeled equipments....never had any flat batteries, only a couple of blown fuses :)
And for the winter, it is always good to pull out the fuses for the gadgets.

I fitted the Touratwat inst cover with aux socket. Run it straight from the battery with a 10amp fuse - that way you can pull heavy loads and also use it for charging.
