Battery connections

What is it with left and right side of a bike ?

This happens on all forums for some unknown reason.................... Tiz simple............... There is no left and right on a motorcycle. There is only clutch and throttle sides. Then it matters not where you stand. Front, behind, sat on, Southern or Northern bit of this rock.

I'm now off to bask in my own smugness, having educated you lot.

I have just noticed the initial picture of a thin red wire running to a terminal post called a jump lead connector. If you connect a battery lead to this and try start the bike it will end in melted wires. The cable is only thin and suitable for an optimate or heated jacket. Look at the big cable off the negative terminal, this is the size of cable you need for using the electric start.

that is from the owner's manual. Its a picture of the RIGHT side of the bike with reference to the connections for jump starting (page 128).

Post No. 1 is the POSITIVE connection.

Post no. 2 is the NEGATIVE connection.

Thanks for all this input and sorry to delay in coming back . I spoke to the dealer who says chargers can't use the jump start terminal so will now do what a lot of you think I should have done to start with namely take the battery out and connect directly. I just couldn't see why the jump terminal wasn't working and didn't want to dismantle and then find it made no difference. The joys of motorbiking!

Nice pictures Giles, and most explanatory, I didn't know about those terminals on the... errr.... left hand side.

thanks

I'm pretty sure the dealers wrong.!
I'm also pretty sure there is a heavy cable looped back to the jump start 'post' from the battery + lead.
I'm also 100% sure my heated keiss jacket & other items I've connected to the jump start post have enough power supply available to them.

left and right on any vehicle always refers to the person sitting in/on the vehicle.

.

100% of people in their everyday life, whether driving a car or riding a bike sit facing forward.

Also, the side stand doesn't change sides depending on where you're standing/sitting, it's always on the lefthand side. .

You don't see this quandary when asking people if they're left or right handed = well it all depends which way i'm facing when you ask me !!!.

Fecking hell, I know i can only be in the W/C section without even checking.......

I know you're all waiting for the update so here it is. The battery comes off quite easily and I connected both the charger and the heated vest to the actual terminals and the charger still didn't work so I tried it on a car battery and no sign of life there either so ...it must be the charger and I've ordered a new one. Given the unit was duff we still don't know for sure if a charger can be connected to the jump terminal. I'll try again with the new charger and report back
